I'd be sending a stiff letter saying that maybe their need was greater than mine so stick it up your jumper. What a bloomin' insult.

Sending a letter, even 2nd class, would cost around two weeks extra pension! Just how is £1 a month supposed to be useful to someone?

That'll be my treat too in a few months time. I am beside myself thinking of all the luxuries I'll be buying with it !

I'll start with getting the council to empty my garden rubbish once a fortnight - Oh no, that is £25 a year, or £1 a time!

Our LA take our garden rubbish away every week for free.
I didn't realise how fortunate we are and how we just take it for granted.

Ours was free until last autumn, then we were informed that if we wanted to continut to have it collected, we would have to sign up, pay £25 a year, and put a sticker on the wheelie bin to show that we had paid up. It is another £25 on the council tax by the back door.

But taking inflation into account my advice to your DH would be to throw caution to the wind and spend it on

Seriously does your MP realise that amount is being distributed when one is 80 years old? I would inform him/her and see if anything could be done about it because as someone said, it costs more to administer the money.

We pay £75 here so count yourselves very lucky re garden waste.

I have been getting mine for 18 months now and by the two year mark I will have enough for a decent bottle of gin (which will last about a month) so I don't believe in looking a gift horse in the mouth ?

As to garden waste, ours went up to £60.00 per year, so we now buy compostable paper sacks, at £1.00 each. They hold an awful lot, and then they get taken away, once a fortnight.
Suits us as we don’t have a lot to go.

Have you read Milly Molly Mandy? She found a penny and invested it wisely in (among other things) buying a skein of wool, knitting a pot holder and selling it at a profit.
There’s a crying need for pot holders so buy a yard of charity shop wool with that 25p!

My husband also 80 last Sunday and he also can’t wait to hit the shops with his 25p a week increase....

We pay about £50 a year for removal of garden waste to a private concern. The waste goes to a local farm where it is minced up for compost etc. LA doesn't offer a garden waste service.

We pay £12 a year for a fortnightly collection of garden waste.

I didn't realise some were paying enormous amounts to have their garden waste removed. Included in our rates is a fortnightly removal of garden waste from April to the end of October. Alternate weeks our recycling rubbish is removed every fortnight and food waste weekly. A general non recycling bin is collected fortnightly. I realise now we are extremely lucky.

Our garden waste removal went up to £60 last year. If it goes up again this year then we'll just take it to the tip ourselves. Mind you, we aren't allowed to take a trailer at weekends, and weekdays it's often closed for skips to be emptied. No wonder people fly tip.

Yes I'll be due that in August. What can they not just stop it? It is such a waste of resources to deliver it. The can try and stop TV licence though!

I'd like to meet the person responsible for arriving at the princely sum of 25p and find out how they arrived at 25p as an adequate amount t in today's world the admin cost probably cost them 10 years rise

I remember my mother getting very cross with people who complained about only getting 25p a wee. Her answer was that she would only complain if it was taken off her. She certainly didn’t have money to spare and lived totally on her state pension.

Remember when Gordon Brown was Chancellor and the pensioners got a derisory increase of about the same amount? Someone organised a protest to get to Downing Street (or as near as they were allowed) whereupon I believe they chucked their collective pittances in the Chancellors direction.......
