Well, I'm not really into football PECS but I do have to listen quite often to what Bristol City are doing! But don't quiz me on it.

There are active sportswomen across the age spectrum , the term for the older generation is veterans.
In some sporting events such has cycling time trials in the UK, you have age related handicaps.
Beryl Burton when she raced against myself, the last time she was older than myself , and I was in my late 30`s .
But as sportswoman , I admire her talent , and at the time she had published her autobiography called Personal Best, anyway I took my copy of her book, and she duly signed she deserved her MBE.
Today, she would be a Dame.

I agree especially with your final comment Mick. All respect to athletes today but there has been a level of “gong” inflation with knighthoods and damehoods(?) apparently being dished out like Smarties.
I think most of us would agree we can lose the “girls” description it is just so patronising.
Perhaps attitudes in Oz are different.

Jalima; Thanks for that teacher.! I see there's a verbatim transcript also on Google, which set me thinking how would teachers and students manage these days without Google, bearing in mind the huge proliferation of information these days? Many, many years ago, in History for example, we had to learn, by rote, all the dates when Kings and Queens of England reigned. No need for that now I guess; just look up Google!
A report on our TV recently highlighted the increasing prevalence of plagiarism in the teacher/student environment, with particular reference to the medical fraternity! Easily done using Google I suppose. OoRoo

You're correct, Rufus, I did google OoRoo because, despite spending a lot of time in Australia, I've never heard anyone use it

I remember Beryl Burton, Mick and well done - you must have been a great cyclist yourself.
Her reputation as an outstanding sportwoman still stands today when so many achieve much less but become instant 'celebs'.

I was just the average cyclist , but the British time trial scene in events allows equality for both men and women to complete against each other.

I just had an ordinary bike - but I did travel quite long distances on it!

I'm not really a snooker fan, but I see that women will be competing against men for the first time in a televised tournament in the UK later this week. Go girls (women)!!
