This is fun.

An interactive quiz in the New York Times tries to place where you were brought up by the way you pronounce some words, and, words you use for things.

It got me, correctly, in the South of England but in the area to the northwest of London, whereas I was an Essex girl!

Ipswich to Portsmouth - I was brought up in Essex; but moved around after that.

Also, I wasn't 'raised'. I was brought up!

Dark areas overall region the south east of England encompassing the counties south of London extending west to Reading and north of London extending north east to Cambridge. taking in quite a few home counties. I was born and brought up in Surrey which falls into that general but it didn't specifically pinpoint that county.

general area

London for me but I pretty much lived all over the place although mainly in the south of England so not far wrong.

Reasonable result for me - centre and south Ireland. I was surprised at the range of words used presumably for different things in different places but had to think a bit about some pronunciations.

Pretty much OK for me when I finished the first section. When asked if I wanted to answer further questions, I carried on, but suddenly the page wanted refreshing and I think lost it’s way. I had to go out, so didn’t really finish. Interesting though.

No map just a sad face icon
But I have moved a lot over many years so pick up bits of accents as I travelled

Suki70 Fri 15-Feb-19 17:25:20

Spot on for me even though I haven't lived in the place where I was born and brought up for fifty five years and my accent has changed.

MawBroon Fri 15-Feb-19 17:26:08

Scottish Borders/Central Belt - spot on!

All of the south of England from the Cotswolds down, particularly Bath and Salisbury area, have never lived in either. I was brought up in Kent and Essex, as an adult I have lived in Norfolk, Suffolk, Hampshire, Buckinghamshire, Somerset and Essex. Guess I’m a bit of a mix.

Not very good for me I could come from anywhere from the farthest tip of Cornwall to top of Lincolnshire and all places in between

BBbevan Fri 15-Feb-19 18:34:03

Spot on. The Welsh valleys with bits of the Home Counties

PamelaJ1 Fri 15-Feb-19 18:47:24

I didn’t get a place on the map either.
My parents were from Lancashire, I was born in Newcastle, started school in Barnsley then moved to Nigeria. I grew up mostly in Hong Kong. Lots of different accents there.

Cherrytree59 Fri 15-Feb-19 19:15:06

Sad faces all round.
No surprise really.
Born in Scotland (west coast) partly brought up in Scotland.

But obviously because my DH and children are from the Midlands I have picked up local words and terms.

I could have answered all the questions using only Scottish words but as I also used words local to where I live now, I added those where you could tick more than one answer.
If it had said only use words from your childhood then I would Have ticked only burn.
When speaking to ny grandchildren I would probably say stream
However if talking to my cousins I would more than likely say burn

Chewbacca Fri 15-Feb-19 19:15:08

Dunno, no map to check against confused

M0nica Fri 15-Feb-19 19:16:47

PamelaJ1, with a similar family history, I got a place on the map, stretching over a very large area, with most of which I have no connection and have rarely visited..

I think surveys like this really only work for those with stable (residential) backgrounds.

Cherrytree59 Fri 15-Feb-19 19:17:11

Oops pressed to soon.
Spent teenage years ib England.smile

I came out as definitely from the Newcastle area. I was actually brought up in Durham and Cleveland, but good effort!

Parsley3 Fri 15-Feb-19 19:21:22

Central Scotland for me. Spot on.

GrandmaKT Fri 15-Feb-19 19:30:51

Correctly placed me in the North West (and I've moved around a bit!)

Grandma70s Fri 15-Feb-19 20:08:22

Miles out for me. It put me in an area that included London, Surrey and Hampshire. I come from Wirral! I did it twice and it was wrong (same sort of wrong) both times. I did live in London for a couple of years, but have never lived in Surrey or Hampshire.
