I have found that masking tape stays on well in the freezer.

My friends and I call this freezer surprize Lol

I too have some UFO’s lurking... the OH bought some bulk buy meat, which was delivered just chilled. He put it all in the freezer before I got home, so it is almost impossible to tell what some of it is.

The mystery meals reminds me of when I used to do a lot of competitions, which required labels from tins to be sent as ‘qualifiers’. I used to label the tins before I took the manufacturer’s labels off, but these used to drop off sometimes, leading to some “interesting” menus.

We have a moderate sized chest freezer and of course, you only get the one basket that suspends from the top edge of the freezer and holds next to nothing. We bulk buy chicken fillets, fish and fish products and also beef, lamb and pork; after all isn't that the whole point of having a freezer?

Well, to get to my point, I found that the food was all getting jumbled up. I tried to keep it tidy with an area for red meat etc but that didn't work either. Then I happened across some of those laundry bags for washing delicates, the mesh ones with a zip across the top, seem to recall they were from Lakeland.

So, I had the idea of colour coding them, I bound the edge of one with red bias tape, one with, blue and one with pink; I now have three separate mesh bags for beef, fish and chicken respectively and know exactly where the meat products are!

We also found the stick on labels fell of so we also use a wipe off marker.

Oh I am not alone!!

I have loads of UFOs in my freezers .I used to really believe that I would remember what those little pots & packages had in them but after pastry turned out to be sugar paste ( the quiche would have been interesting!) I decided to label everything carefully.
I bought nice labels from Lakeland & a freezer proof pen & was very smug. What I had not thought about was that even good quality labels fall off in the freezer so I have lots of little pots, packages etc. & lots of labels but not TOGETHER!
I like to think of it as a challenge now- whatever comes out of freezers has to be used- we've had some 'interesting' meals. Actually butternut & parmesan cheese soup made a really nice base for a gammon joint in pressure cooker. I might even make it again intentionally one day.

Sticky labels tend to fall off in the freezer.

I always label and date everything before it goes into the freezer, the other day I came across an unlabeled plastic box. It is either soup or possibly pasta sauce. The mystery is the other containers of soup and pasta sauce are clearly labeled so what happened with this one?

I make myself sound organised, but you haven't seen my collection of elastic bands, padded envelopes and plastic 'twisty ties!

I usually freeze soups/stews or chicken striped off a carcass. I put meat bones, bread if its mouldy & no good for birds into my waste food caddy, all peelings & leaves etc off veg go into green waste bin (specific instructions from local Council). Get the occasional surprise from freezer but not often

As for UFO's around the house or stored in boxes out of sight

Did have the same problem until I could not decipher what was what a d needed the space for "just in case" items. Felt really good when cleared out. Some of the stuff went to the dog next door so not totally wasted. Now I have to tackle the mountain of herbs I have stored from the garden. But, that's a other day.

My husband is very guilty of not labelling food he puts into the freezer. Or he will label it in his best handwriting, which mean that neither of us can decipher it.

We have had some "interesting" meal combinations as a result

Did anyone else get snowbound and miss their flight this week? We are supposed to be in the Caribbean and now instead we are all downhearted and snowbound . One very disappointed family .

Talking of unfinished objects I'm still 'finishing' DH. Long way to go (bet he would say the same about me)

.....well I mean its not compostable in yer average garden compost bin.....unless you want the rats about!

ps we did eat some of them after they were thawed and identified!

I was getting really excited when I read the OP title and was going to persuade DH to jump in the car so we could come down with a telescope!



We've just disposed of a few UFOs as we had a freezer problem and now everything is neat and tidy and within a reasonable date. Labelled with one of those non-smudge pens.

UFOs are also Un Finished Objects (ie craft half done, knitting not sewn up, curtains need lining etc).

Meaty stuff and cold pasta is compostable, hildaw. That is why it's worth collecting. We're not talking about garden composting methods with this stuff, although for several years we did have a Green Cone garden composter into which we put bones and 'meaty stuff'. Because of its construction and the way it utilised sunshine to generate heat, it did break down the bones and meaty stuff. Local authorities will have much bigger models of this system, probably with other energy sources too.

I take your point Baggs, but while it is still edible, throwing it out still somehow feels wasteful.

I just persuaded DH to sort out the freezer and put all the older stuff on one shelf and the unnecessary things he had just bought on a separate shelf and not to buy any more. Himself doing all the shopping and cooking is a mixed blessing!
