Where do they put it??

We've just had (single dad) son and 5 grandchildren to stay for a week - so lovely and such fun! But oh my word! Where do they put all that food? We live very remotely, and so do a shop rarely - I filled the pantry/fridge/freezer before they arrived. Glancing at the supermarket receipts, I see that they consumed the following: 16 loaves of bread, 5 dozen eggs, 8 litres of milk, 2 kilos of cheese, 1 kg yogurt, 5 kilos of sausages and a heap of homemade burgers on the barbeque, with a dozen burger buns, 5 kilos of chicken legs, 6 freshly-caught snapper straight out of the sea, 1 kg prime mince, 1 kg butter, a large fruit cake, a dozen banana muffins and 40 wholemeal choc chip biscuits (all homemade), 4 lettuce, 6 broccoli heads, 2 cauliflowers, a cabbage, a huge bag of homegrown potatoes and at least 8 kilos of tomatoes from the garden, 3 kg oranges, 1 kg fresh apricots, 1 kg sweet potatoes, 4 red peppers, 6 avocados, spring onions and carrots in salad every day, a litre of cream, 2 litres of icecream, 4 litres orange juice, a tub of drinking chocolate, plus "treats" (the usual...)
They are very active and energetic, and permanently hungry! No wonder my son is perpetually broke! Is this normal?? smile

sounds about average , but how do you get fresh tomatoes from the garden in January ?

PECS Mon 14-Jan-19 21:57:44

Yup!

Looking at the list I think you got off light with 3 adults and 5 children.

Sounds about right to me and if you have adult visiting DGCs there's alcohol to add into the equation as well. shock

Freshly caught snapper!

I'm jealous!

I love feeding my family.

BradfordLass72 Mon 14-Jan-19 22:32:36

It's January here too - and my tomatoes plants are full of fruit. The temperature is close to 25 ºC so there'll be more soon.

Boadicea That shopping list is pretty good for 8 people over a week. I've just roughly added it up and the daily amount, especially for 5 active children, is not excessive at all.

Eight people, fed three meals a day for seven days - yes, that looks about right to me too.

I'm super impressed with your eight kilos of tomatoes. We were amazed this week to get a small bowlful from our greenhouse in a final flush from last years plants.

My teenage grandkids get through the fridge in a day

Jalima1108 Mon 14-Jan-19 23:39:56

I hope they helped with the cooking!
Are you in Australia Boadicea?
Barbecues, fresh tomatoes and freshly caught snapper!
Sounds lovely.

BoadiceaJones Tue 15-Jan-19 00:48:04

NZ, Jalima.
I should add that the kids are aged 3-11, so not even yet at the endless eating stage. The list did not include staples already in the pantry - breakfast cereals, canned food, ketchup, jam/nutella/marmite, rice, pasta etc. And yes, merlot, in 30+ deg heat, cold beers, Sauv Blanc and lots of fizzy water essential!

Ha ha!
What a joyful post.
Just wait till they’re all young adults!

Yep that sounds about right. We had five AC and seven GC staying at Christmas so we stocked every cupboard, fridge and freezer to capacity. Two days after they arrived we were back at the supermarket restocking. I didn't bother totting it all up, it's too scary!

Nonnie Tue 15-Jan-19 11:09:32

That all sounds lovely. Family occasions are the best and I love to feed my tribe. Of course when they go I am left with all the over catering to use up. Anyone fancy coming round to help me use up a huge bowl of cheesy pasta with bacon and broccoli in? It is happily frozen but far too big for DH and me.

Over and above the food is the gas and electricity! I have to submit monthly meter readings and notice a spike in the months when family have been staying. There seems to be chargers in every socket constantly, and the showers! We wouldn't have it any other way though.

I have noticed that if it on the table my DS will eat it, so any kiddy plate leftovers find a good home. I have never fancied eating from baby or child plates myself

Teetime Tue 15-Jan-19 11:20:08

Sounds as though they had a wonderful time and are a very lucky family .

Craftycat Tue 15-Jan-19 11:29:03

Oh yes!! I have 6 DGC who stay regularly - in 2 lots of 3 usually & it never ceases to amaze me how much food they get through. Now the eldest is 14 & 6'3" he seems to just make food disappear by looking at it!
They all love Grandma's cooking too so I do go to perhaps too much trouble to make things they do not get at home.
TBH I love every minute of it!!

Patticake123 Tue 15-Jan-19 11:34:26

Sounds absolutely fabulous! It is grey and gloomy in the U.K. and just the thought of eating freshly caught snapper is making me green with envy. I think your son and his lads sound pretty normal to me. I remember when I had a houseful of youngsters it was like feeding the five thousand!

EllanVannin Tue 15-Jan-19 11:40:34

Wonderful to see them all with hearty appetites. It'll certainly stand them in good stead for future years. I love red snapper-----had it with chips in Oz, sitting on Palm Beach. Memories.

I certainly know what a young family goes through. I used to think they'd all got hollow legs.

EllanVannin Tue 15-Jan-19 11:42:25

PS,sadly I've never got out of the habit of buying for an " army " sad

Teacheranne Tue 15-Jan-19 12:13:04

I remember those days of never ending food shopping! My sons are both tall, 6 ft 7 and 6 ft 4 and as teenagers took a lot of filling up! I used to keep the treats ( crisps, biscuits and juice) in the boot of my car while at work or else it disappeared while I was out! My daughter still remembers having to eat very fast in order to grab some pudding before her brothers are it all!

Theoddbird Tue 15-Jan-19 12:51:13

Thank goodness I live on a boat and mine can only visit for the afternoon. I have to say what a wonderfully fresh and healthy diet you gave them....

maryhoffman37 Tue 15-Jan-19 13:01:04

It sounds like a pretty healthy diet, especially if they are very active.

mabon1 Tue 15-Jan-19 13:36:33

Is that all?
