Mattresses

We didn't buy the cheapest, but tried them out. If you can get to a Dreams branch (they have hundreds) and are prepared to take your shoes off and lie on the mattresses, I know no better way to be sure the mattress is OK

Some years ago when DD had a very limited budget she bought a bed frame and mattress there and remains very pleased with her purchase.

2 years ago we bought very reasonably priced mattresses for our two grandchildren, both sleeping in standard single beds, at Dreams www.dreams.co.uk/mattresses/single?p=3 I think we paid just over £100 each for them. They are very comfortable (I slept on one for several nights when visiting).

Dreams are currently running a half price sale.

Oh yes, I hadn't thought of Ikea. I don't drive though, and they charge £50 delivery.
Still, I think there is an Ikea outlet that sells on eBay.

Sorry, just realised you said you could only afford cheap. DD bought her guest bed from Ikea and I find it very comfortable, haven't looked at their prices but could be an option.

Yes, I have my mind set on memory foam. I have a lovely one, inherited from my mum, as she never got to sleep on it.
Hers was really reasonable, but it feels great.
I'm hoping to find an equivalent.

I bought, what I considered, an expensive mattress and it developed dips and hollows very quickly and was definitely not the luxury item they told me I was buying.
The only way to get a comfortable mattress is to visit a showroom and try lying on all the mattresses in your price range.
Hulsta are the most comfortable, my guest rooms have these mattresses and they are reversable, summer and winter sides.

I have a memory foam mattress with a topper and I cannot envisage sleeping on anything else like it, because for me, it is comfort personified.

I have found some on Amazon, good reviews, and then someone puts a spanner in the works by saying "don't buy this, very uncomfortable, can feel the springs"..
I think maybe the all foam ones might be a better option.

Have a look at Ideal World online and channel 22- I am sure there are others, and you will see some bargains there. I bought a really good and very reasonably priced mattress there.

Dunelm Mill maybe another place to visit if there is one near you.

Do not buy the cheapest, you will regret it because it will not last and you will end up spending more.

Springs with memory foam on top, foam which isn't memory foam but contours to your body..
It threw me a bit.

In that case I’d be looking at what’s best for an adult. I think you need to go to bed shop to examine and test. Some cheap mattresses don’t last.
If it has to be reasonably priced, foam is probably better than a cheap spring one.

Yes, he's been out of his cot for 10 years. Ha.
Well, I noticed him disappearing inside the saggy old mattress a while ago, so he needs a new one.
I think his mum had the one he is sleeping on, so its years old.
I decided to do the decent thing and splash out.

If he is out of a cot (if not then a safety mattress is paramount) then whichever mattress you get, go for a memory foam topper (Wayfair have them for reasonable prices). They just make all the difference!

He's 11, and quite sturdy (takes after me!)

What age is he? Is mattress for cot or bed? There’s a type of “Eco-fibre” cot mattress which is quite cheap- I got one and it seems fine.
