Anyone doing Dry January this year? I'm doing it again and its day 4 and all going ok so far. It does help to cut down on bad habits. Anyone needing support? what strategies work for you? Don't come on and moralise about being teetotal or only having a thimble of sherry once a year, I'm interested in anyone who is doing it as a bit of a challenge.

That’s good to know GrannyGravy13, I was thinking of trying that ?

I was doing really well with my dry January until this evening. I have been getting my books ready to hand into our accountant tomorrow. This is an annual task that I dread. This year I have had the dreaded hacking cough etc that is going around and I have been really tired so it has been much more of a trial than usual. I am almost done and will finish it by tomorrow but was so exhausted that it was really only a G+T that was going to relax me with our evening meal. Just the one though!

Birthdays this month: DH, DD, DSiL, DS, niece and even the cat. No hope whatsoever of dry January. Like glammagran we dont drink Monday to Thursday but Friday, Saturday and Sunday are a whole different ball game. Our local is offering a free tasting for Seedlip, has anyone tried that? Its a new non-alcoholic spirit served like a G&T. Havent taken them up on it yet, but might try dry February.

No way! Too many birthdays this month and every month, plus my wine club. I have a sherry and a glass of wine every evening and I'm not going to be stopped or made to feel guilty for enjoying that.

Cutdownuary here as well - after drinking for ten days in a row over Christmas we have managed to have several days off, but its not going to last the whole month grin

No, I haven't gone "dry January", but rather, "go easy January" - not that we go mad , anyway, but Christmas is a time when I probably drink more than usual, so after Christmas, it's a case of not quite so much! Actually, this Christmas, we haven't had as much as in previous Christmases because either I or DH have been a bit under the weather on various days of the hols, so haven't felt like indulging. Moderation, though, that's the thing for us rather than abstinence. ?

You all put me to shame ladies! Couldn’t even contemplate it I’m afraid especially not in January! As a breast cancer survivor I treat every day as a bonus and a glass or two of an evening is my reward for surviving another day! ???

glammagran Sat 05-Jan-19 19:52:34

Oh and the days at start of week are not alcohol free if it’s hot - then I can’t resist ice cold rose

glammagran Sat 05-Jan-19 19:50:59

Done so for many years (apart from last year whilst on cruise). Don’t find it especially hard as my body is begging for a respite from the wine. We don’t drink Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (sometimes Thursday) generally but drink way too much the other days. February normally goes quite well then it all goes downhill for the rest of the year.

Going to attempt it for the first time, Susied. OH has done dry months before and always amazed me with his willpower! We started our dry month on Jan 2nd but today we both seem to be starting with colds, a nice hot toddy would have gone down a treat!

Piitcity -that made me laugh outloud and startle the cat !

Foxygran Sat 05-Jan-19 18:14:34

It may sound daft, but a nutritionist advised me to have sparkling water with squeezed lime and a slice, as a replacement drink. It worked very well for me as it ‘feels’ like a proper drink, no sugar, and actually quite good for you. Give it a try! I’ve got a cup of tea tonight though as I’ve just overdone it on birthday cake!!

Can’t be done as I am still drinking the contents of my fabulous gib advent calendar ?

Pittcity Sat 05-Jan-19 15:32:35

I am planning to do Flabuary, Starch and Cakepril...wink

Good for you Bijou. "A little bit of what you fancy does you good"!
My 103 year old aunt has a glass of wine every night at 8pm and often offers me a sherry at mid day ?

Joelise Sat 05-Jan-19 15:26:31

Not doing a dry January as my birthday is in the middle of the month, but am planning a dry Lent !

Bijou Sat 05-Jan-19 15:26:06

At my age, 95, there are few pleasures left and I enjoy my glass of Guiness with my lunch and drop of wine with my dinner so amcertainly not giving them up.

maryhoffman37 Sat 05-Jan-19 15:21:18

Not having a dry January but a bread-free one! My daughter did it for a months and lost 8.3 cms from her circumference.

I am perfectly happy with Adam's Ale when driving or if I don't fancy a glass of wine. But a fab sauvignon is as welcome as a great chocolate or delicious piece of fruit when you are looking to spoil yourself. A little of what you fany does you good! ?

MrsDoyle Sat 05-Jan-19 14:42:15

There may have been a time when it might have been a good idea but, these days, I can take or leave alcohol. I do know some people who are doing it but they are still working and their social lives are more hectic than mine.
I had a glass of champagne on Thursday with my posh restaurant afternoon tea. I enjoyed it and felt no guilt whatsoever.

This is the time of year I struggle to stay cheery sooo No! I have a few lovely bottles my favourite liqueur ( Christmas gifts). These will sustain me until spring arrives wink

icanhandthemback Sat 05-Jan-19 14:35:14

I'm doing the opposite. I am normally mainly teetotal with the very occasional sip of Porter if I find any. This year though, I received 15 bottles of various Porters and they'll go off if I don't drink them in January. grin

Helennonotion Sat 05-Jan-19 14:30:18

Barmeyoldbat - That sounds far more doable!

Helennonotion Sat 05-Jan-19 14:29:36

Sorry I meant to add, my strategy was to buy THE most expensive soft drinks. M&S do some sparkling juice in rather exotic fruit flavours in a wine type bottle with a cork! Non alcoholic of course, but it still felt like a treat. Sadly I didnt ever manage to find anything decent to drink when we went out eating or at the pub that wasnt sickly sweet. I ended up drinking lime and soda mostly, but after a couple of those you just feel awash with liquid and slightly queasy!
