Newmom101 in the 60s and 70s there were not the social security benefits available for single mothers that there are now. So unless the young woman's family were prepared to help either financially or by looking after the baby while the mother worked putting the child up for adoption was the only answer. Not all adoptiobs were forced adoptions. Not every young mother wanted to keep her baby and felt adoption was the answer. Of the young women I knew who had babies while single only one kept her baby because her parents were prepared to help despite all the gossip going on at the time. It was a very different era compared to life now.
