Coat hangers!

The plastic ones breed in the wardrobe , and fight you when you try to oust them! Get thee to Primark , their bundles of wooden hangers are cheap as chips, I replaced all my plastic ones and my wardrobe’s a much calmer place!,

I can’t get everything in my wardrobe if I use wooden hangers but I do have the ‘suede’ covered ones from Matalan. They do stop stuff falling off and are narrow enough to accommodate everything in my overcrowded wardrobe!?

LuckyGirl I recently changed all of my hangars for velvet coated ones - found on Amazon. Wardrobe looks much better as they don't take up so much space AND nothing falls off them. Money well spent! Redundant plastic ones recycled to a lady who has an ironing business.

One of my elderly relatives (this was years ago) always called her coat hangers "shoulder sticks". Was this just her or is it a regional thing? I've never heard it from anyone else.

I changed all my hangers a few months ago to white wooden ones which I bought in Aldi on one of their special offer deals,there where 6 in a pack and I think they may have been £2.99 a pack (maybe wrong on price) I bought 6 x packs and still needed more so will have to wait until next time they come on offer.
I also must have the hangers facing the same way in the wardrobe.

Most of my coat hangers have a knitted 'sleeve' on them and nothing ever falls off them. I think I just acquired them along the way. Plastic coat hangers should be reused by shops or banned or charged for like plastic bags, metal ones likewise, but they can be recycled in the metal section at the local tip. I try to never put anything in the bin which can be reused or recycled.

Just bought some slimline flock ones - this a something I have never done in my life - never too old to learn!

I use wooden hangers and bamboo garment covers for heavy items (trouser suits, coats/jackets) and for out of season winter wear. The fuzzy felt hangers are used for blouses and spring/summer garments which I cover with polythene garment covers (£1.99 for 25 on eBay) a slightly heavier version of the kind used by dry cleaners.
I also ask M&S for trouser hangers if I need any.
All my clothes are in colour order according to type (blouses/shirts/ skirts etc) and my sons are just as finniky, spending huge amounts of money on their clothes, unlike my modest clothes spend, but they don't let their wives/g/f launder any of it.

Mine are all non-slip suede effect. Nothing falls off and because they’re so thin, you get loads more clothes in your wardrobe than you would with bulky wooden ones. Maybe far to many clothes in my case. You can buy them in Matalan, Tkm, B&M. Almost any where actually

Marks and Spencer will recycle their own make hangers, our local Tesco has a receptacle for any others.

Stella1949 does the same thing as I do and have done for many years. Put elastic bands on the ends and nothing falls off. If you haven't got elastic bands a few wraps with Sellotape is just as good.

Who would believe there could be so many posts about coat hangers

I also hate hangers, especially in shops. I only have to look at a rack of clothes to have an item slide to the floor!
The one exception to my hanger-hate is a wooden one with Rosa written on it. It belonged to my mother, and must be over 100 years old. I would never part with it.

On the subject of coat hangars, how do you store/hang jumpers cardigans, , if I hang them they get bumps in the shoulders, if I fold them in a drawer they get crushed, ?

I like the velvet/suede type of coat hangers as things don’t slip off them. You can get packs of the from TKMaxx. DH prefers wooden ones. All other types are declined at the checkout.

I like coat hangers, particularly padded hangers. How else would you store your clothes I ask? Is it so difficult to sew hanging loops to garments which need them? I don't think so.

Lilypops I do tend to hang cardigans. The velvet/suede hangers tend to have rounded ends so you don’t get the bumps at the shoulders. Jumpers and tee shirts I fold and then roll up so they don’t get creased. There are lots of tutorials on You Tube showing how to fold and roll clothing expertly.

I've got rid of most of the wire hangers.
I kept a few, because they have other uses, eg getting things out which have fallen under furniture, unblocking drains, picking locks ? etc.

If you fold jumpers etc properly and don't cram too many in a drawer, there is no reason for them to be crushed but here are two options which may help.
1) Buy a couple of underbed plastic boxes, long enough to lie the garment in lengthways with just the arms folded or widthways with arms folded and bottom half folded up.
2) Buy a quantity of tissue paper from eBay (it's really cheap) and crush and mould a couple of sheets into a shape like a cob (loaf) the size of your fist and lightly tape to the top end of the hanger without crushing the shape.
I'm sure GNers will have more suggestions.

Wilko and Primark sell coat hangers with a non-slip velvet covering. If I went on Room 101, hangers would be my top choice!

I too only buy good wooden coat hangers with notches for the loops in skirts and dresses.

My clothes must be well behaved for they rarely slip off the hangers.

If yours do, take an ordinary clothes peg and peg both sides of the loop just under the hanger. That way the clothes certainly can't slip off.

The non slip felt covered coat hangers from Primark, Matalan, and Pound Stretchers, are a sanity saver, honestly. Nothing falls off those things, and they only cost about £3 or £4 for 1/2 dozen or so . I wouldn't have wooden or plastic ever again.

Never throw metal coat hangers for the cleaners' out!

They are admittedly useless as coat hangers, but you can straighten them out, leaving the hook intact, and make a useful gadget for fishing things out from behind radiators.

You can also use the wire to make angels wings or fairy wings for the dressing-up box, standing Elizabethan collars etc. and straightened out and cut to the right length you can make the framework for a star for the top of the Christmas tree in just the size you need. To say nothing of flying angels in a nativity scene or the star the Wise Men followed.

Next time you’re in M&S, if you ask very nicely, they will give you some of theirs that they send off for recycling. Always ask if you can have the ones with the ‘rubber’ (non slip!) ends, as none of my clothes fall off when using these.

Elegran: I found your instructions for making dowsers fascinating. Do they only 'find' water, or can they be used for other things? I've lost a rather expensive earring in the garden. It could only be on the ground somewhere near where I was sitting at the time. I tried a pendulum on the area, but that didn't work.
If a couple of old coathangers could find my diamond, I promise the coathanger god that I will never shout at them again - ever! No matter how tangled or messy they get, I will always bless them, and be thankful for their existence.
