No way would I pay £100 for a turkey. Flippin' rediculous. How many people in need would that amout feed.
The baby won't know how much the toy cost and will no doubt by delluged with presents. So I see nothing wrong there.

If those are their principles, then they should stick to them.

On principle I would never pay that for a turkey-way OTT. The baby is not going to know the cost of the gift and it would be as happy with the wrappings.

Free Range, organic, local turkeys are very expensive. If this couple can afford it and it fits with their views on animal welfare, who are we to criticise.
It isn't uncommon for a certain kind of individual to buy from charity shops, rather than new,, especially for a baby who won't have any idea of the whys and wherefores. I just hope they didn't buy 2nd hand plastic but put their money into wooden, or similarly acceptable toys. Mind you, wood was acceptable last time I looked but the "right thing" changes like the wind.

Actually, I think their turkey costs a lot less than most people spend, so good on 'em.

You only know about the toy. Do you know for definite that they didn’t put money away for the baby in a savings account. I didn’t buy my grandchildren presents when they were babies I put money away for them.
As others have said, at that age they would be happy with wrapping paper screwed up.
It is only when they reach two that they expect laptops and PS4’s

Don’t have a problem with the Charity shop gift at all, why not? recycling is a good thing. I buy a lot in charity shops, double, even treble, bubble, I benefit as does the charity and the item doesn’t end up in landfill.
Do turkeys cost that much? We don’t buy it so don’t have no clue, prefer a bit of beef, a fraction of the price.

What is wrong with a charity shop buy for a present? If the gift is appropriate, why buy new when you can combine it with helping other people.

When we are constantly being told to buy less stuff and recycle where possible, spending your money on a top of the range turkey seems a sensible thing to do. They will undoubtedly eat every scrap of meat on it and make stock from the carcase, what little remains will go into the food waste bin to be used to make methane gas, which is then used to make electricity.

I buy a free range organic turkey every year. It tastes entirely different to most turkeys, which I do not particularly like. It feeds 5 people for the better part of a week and provides soup for several days into January.

Christmas is a time of feasting and if I choose to spend my money on really good meat and cut out nearly all of the nibbles, and 'party' food, chocolates, nuts and vast quantities of vegetables that are usually uneaten and go to waste. So what.

I agree with you MOnica. Spending what money you have on a few good quality food items, organic meat, some local cheese and a good wine is, to me a better use of it than loading up the pantry with expensive mass produced and highly processed food.

I bought a free range turkey once and the smell while it was cooking was so disgusting we couldn’t eat it!

I usually buy a locally raised free range turkey and costs me for max 10 diners plus several days!) about £70. Not this year though.. admitting defeat to bad back and buying in a pre prepared meal!

Their life, their money. At least they have principles and have thought things through, more people should do it. Nothing with charity shop items/recycled goods.

I have similar principles which involve living simply, only buying essentials, recycling, not wasting food, not buying shelves and cupboards full of cosmetics, handbags and shoes, not buying tat.
