Both my parents were of the generation where praise was considered 'bad' for children. We knew they loved us and thought well of us but they would never say so directly to us. At their funerals, their friends all told us how endlessly proud they were of their 3 daughters.

My wife is overly impressed by my vast knowledge of life.
