Is it just me? or does anyone else feel irritated when you tell a friend or relative something, for example, “I nearly missed my flight after getting caught in traffic. It ended up such a rush at the airport & the reply is “What a shame” or if texting similar, getting same reply, what a shame. Thats just an example ?

Bless is so patronising my SIL drives me mad with that and hun.
My dear departed mum used to hate the word plus.
She used to visable cringe at the use of the word.

Babelvoodoo Sat 08-Dec-18 15:37:23

I dislike the omission of the word house, as in I'll come over to yours. Your what?
Also why has the word treble been superseded by triple?

Kathleenm1111 Sat 08-Dec-18 15:52:08

'No Problem' is one of our pet peeves. A proper response is : "You are welcome" or "My Pleasure", as far as we are concerned.
My husband assiduously reinforced the appropriate response to his office staff.
They responded by giving him a printed coffee mug with "No Problem" with a slash through it as a holiday gift.

Arks instead of ask
Different to
Can I get?
Do you know what I mean?
Blue sky thinking
Wake up and smell the coffee ( in fact all office jargon whatsoever)
I feel your pain
Follow your dream
I am proud of myself

scribbles - "Know wha' I mean?"

I heard one of the women from one of the "The Only Way Is . . " programmes on tv. She said, what sounded to me, like

Ja nart a meen

Thankfully there were subtitled, which revealed she had actually attempted to say "do you know what I mean".

Sheba Sat 08-Dec-18 16:27:33

You can "get it for free" surely get it free or get it for nothing !!!!

icanhandthemback Sat 08-Dec-18 16:43:33

Let's give it up for...! What do they want me to give up?

Vickixx Sat 08-Dec-18 16:44:43

Lucky four, I used the flight story as something that was part of a conversation. I wouldn’t make a long text out of it.
If I text someone about something serious that’s happened to me & they feel it’s ok to text back & say ‘what a shame’ I would choose someone more responsive the next time to share my troubles with. At least say for example ‘that sounds awful,I hope your ok’ It doesn’t take much therefore ‘what a shame’ & to leave it at that, is still a no response in my books.

Vickixx Sat 08-Dec-18 16:50:07

Kathleenm111, My husband banned the use of ‘no problem’ as reply to instructions in his workplace. ??

Sheba Sat 08-Dec-18 16:56:46

"I'm the kind of person who......"

Gaggi3 Sat 08-Dec-18 17:02:25

I remember adults saying " Then I/he/ she turned round and said..." a lot when I was young. People must have been revolving constantly.

Gaggi3 Sat 08-Dec-18 17:15:00

I freely admit to being irritated by many of the expressions and grammatical errors posted here, but this thread has made me laugh , so thank you ,Vickixx.

gillyjp Sat 08-Dec-18 17:25:44

'Early doors' yuk.
Starting a sentence or answering a question with 'So'.
Saying 'cool' in response to a statement uttered by someone else.
Gggrrrrr (that's not a pet irritation - that's me showing annoyance)

JanaNana Sat 08-Dec-18 17:26:25

When people add the words " for me" at the end of a request instead of just saying please. ( ie ) "could you sign this form please;" they say" could you sign this form For Me.
When you ask someone " how are you" rep!y " I'm good."
Hun & Yay.

petra Sat 08-Dec-18 17:26:33

Lillyflower
arks isn't a mispronunciation, it dates back to old English.

CazB Sat 08-Dec-18 17:33:02

It's a steep learning curve.
I'm like.....
