I think Vicki means they should say, would have, could have, should have i stead of would of, etc. But would’ve, sounds the same as would of ....... so .....

Actually, Teetime, surely, "can I help you?" is correct, as you wouldn't be in the shop if you didn't want the shop assistant to help you.

"May I help you" means "Will you permit me to help you?"

My father's standard reply to children who asked "Can I?" when they meant "May I?" was, "I'm sure you are physically capable of doing so, but if you are solicitating my permission, you mean May I?"

But I admit in the case of the phrase "Can I help you?" the distinction is unclear, and like you, I find "May I help you?" more polite.

Happy to answer questions re what response I would have preferred rather than simply ‘what a shame’ Loads & an example would be to empathise with the situation & say something like ‘I know how it feels’ ‘That must have been so frustrating’ I’m pleased you made your flight’ To only say, or worse, only text what a shame just feels a bit patronising & superior as if to say ‘you poor thing’ Hope this explains it although I understand not everyone will feel that way ?

Cute! How I hate that word, regularly applied to baby, puppy and kitten pictures. In shops ‘can I help you?’ being called out when you’re next in line at the till in stead of ‘next please’ - yes, of course you can, you can serve me, why else should I be here? Train station instead of railway station, two times instead of twice, haitch instead of aitch, me and my friend were doing something or other instead of my friend and I .... Oh for goodness sake stop me someone or else this will be the longest post I’ve ever done (miserable old woman that I am!)

I added something else which to me belongs in the same category ? saying ‘thank you’ to someone & the reply is ‘no problem’ When what a shame & no problem are said alone, it feels rather patronising & a bit superior.

Stop me too!!!! I absolutely hate ‘no worries’ ?

I've remembered another... "mate" when referring to your young son or daughter. It irritates me no end!
