Headscarves

Oh yes Grannyqueenie, I remember the rainmates, every hairdresser used to keep them at the reception desk, my mum used them after a perm/hairdo even on a sunny day. I used carmen rollers back in late 60’s, they were so heavy. Also remember using them to make ringlets in little hair pieces you put on halfway down back of head and tied with ribbon, think that was early 70’s

I have actually had a desire to wear one of these for a few years now (tied under the chin) and could not find one in a square shape for love nor money. Then I was on the train to Victoria in October and for no discernible reason, the train stopped at Peckham Rye and we were all told to find another way to get ourselves to Victoria! I went out onto the High St looking for a bus and lo and behold, it was like market day in Jamaica! I found all the square scarves I wanted for £1 each so I bought several. Amazing I didn't even know that existed. Planning a trip back in warmer weather.

Oh yes, Taymara, I remember those pleated plastic thingeys...some even had fancy coloured spots!!!

In the 60s in the Mods and Rockers days, if you were a mod on the back of your boyfriend’s scooter, you wore a headscarf with the knot actually on the chin, not under it. A strange idea but it was all part of the look!

I bought 2 friends headscarves for Christmas last year, they had magnetic ends that helped to wear them in different ways, including tied at the back of the neck.

Yes Speldnan, both my sister and I used Carman rollers.

My mum and my auntie wore headscarves, but not over rollers. My grandmother never, she always wore a hat when she went out.

Re hair rollers- my friend and I used to use those Carmen heated rollers in the 60s anyone else?

I've just found some pretty woolen ones at Etsy. Reasonably priced too.

I remember the women coming out of the local factory with their headscarves tied like turbans. Just recall that back in the fifties no woman went out without a headscarf or hat (a la Norah Batty!). And remember my DM and DMIL wearing similar style hats!

I've been looking as well Fennel. My mum is of the opinion, they are good enough for the Queen, they are good enough for her if it's very wet or windy.
Does anyone know where you can find them (not chiffon, she needs something a bit warmer)

I was looking for a silk square headscarf in town last week and they don't exist! Only long ones.
I used to have some pretty ones from my Mum, who wore them around her neck (she said she had a scrawny neck). But I got rid of them when we moved. [sad}

I think the chiffon scarf over the curlers was to allow wet hair to dry. There was nothing worse than uncurling long hair, only to find the innermost bit was still wet.

I wish they would come back into fashion as they are ever so useful when your hair is a mess or the weather is damp or windy. I've still got a couple from years ago

I suffered the agonies of rags as well! I've got a large bag of scarves my mum left, no idea what to do with them, chiffon, silk etc.
I recently had to show some girls how to tie scarves in turbans when they were meant to be factory workers. They'd never seen one.

I had a selection I remember. I wore them a lot when I was living at home to cover my greasy locks as my DM would only allow me to wash my hair once a week! I now have even more long ones.

I remember my DM wearing an old one tied 40’s fashion with the knot at the top and the front when she ‘did’ a chicken as she said it kept the smell out of her hair. Chicken innards do stink!

Hats ! Very few went out without them. A " posh " alternative to the headscarf. The hat used to remain perched on mum's head even when preparing meals if we'd been out, but the headscarf was whipped off smartish as it flattened the perm hahahaha.
Dad was never without his trilby.

I could never get the hang of tying the knot at the back of the neck....made me look like a Russian peasant.

My mum wore a head scarf nearly every day in '50s and '60s. Especially when riding her push bike to work. She then started wearing hats whenever she went out but only in the winter.

I remember rags too - painful! My mum also wore a red check scarf in the style of a land girl, knotted at the front of her head.
