Post-War Christmas memories

Oh I remember the milk bottle top silver bells too BBbevan! And little bits of cotton wool scattered over the tree as snow smile.
Have to say my memories of Christmas dinner are that we always had turkey, for as far back as I can remember. But then again my memories only go back as far as the early 50s, so it may have been different in the late 40s. Chicken was a rare treat in those days, though - long before they dreamed up the horror that is factory farming sad

We made strings of silver bells for the tree by folding washed milk bottle tops over our fingers. Then we threaded them on cotton. You had to wash the tops well as they would give off a sour smell if you didn't

Is it just me? I remember that Christmas Day lunch was with a roast chicken, certainly not turkey! Also, my parents would buy ONE bottle of French red wine for the adults. We children drank water, as usual.
Boxing Day,was the cold roast chicken with Heinz Russian Salad and Heinz Potato Salad. We loved it though.

Only had chicken at Christmas for several years but, as I said... is this just me?

Of course, we cracked nuts and ate tangerines and the crackers contained really good surprises.

We certainly were not well off but nor were we poor.

Anybody else have memories?
