New fad....the croaky voice.

I've just had 5 live on , in the car. A person was speaking about her mothers death.....potentially and interesting and helpful subject but she had that fry thing big style.

My granddaughter! 12 years old and drawls like, yeah, like, aaaallll the time (insert upward inflection), denoting aaaaa "I'm talking to you but it's too much effort to speak right now" (roll eyes) kind of thing. Yah.

Is it a special one with very long sleeves that tie at the front?

Ooh yes, I remember that. I also remember my older sister in the fifties turning her cardigan back to front, so that the buttons were down the back. I still do that now sometimes!

My dil speaks with vocal fry. She's Californian and it's just part of how they speak.

Your mention of cardigans, Willow, reminded me of that 80's trend for women to have the collars of their shirts/blouses sticking up round their necks, like a ruff, instead of folded double as normal.

You never see that nowadays so I suppose it's due to return to fashion soon!

Ooooh, so that's what it is ! It's been driving me nuts for ages but I didn't know how to describe it! You are right lemongrove, these strange fads come and go but they can be soooo irritating. I remember in the mid eighties working at a youth club and the teenage girls started wearing their cardigans falling off the shoulder. Some would suddenly develop a funny walk, as though they'd had an embarrasing accident - but they apparently thought it looked cool. Not cool at all - just daft! (But then that weird hairstyle I had at 13 must have looked pretty daft too!)

There used to be a teenage fashion of hiding the hands in very long sleeved jumpers, these fads come and go.

American women ( some) have a super turbo desert fry.
I hear them being interviewed on Radio 4 all the time.

I watched a young woman sit and eat her meal with her arms folded inside her jacket, and one just reaching out a tiny bit to spear her food every now and then.
She had that voice too.

It's been around for years and is known as a Vocal Fry.
This strange beastie is most often to be found in young women who are soooo bored with life, wander around with their shoulders rounded and arms folded, treating their parents and other 'oldies' with total disdain
