Aspartame

Another "fake news" story. Aspartame has been approved by the EU for consumption by adults and children alike. The only people who should avoid it are those who have the genetic disorder Phenylketonuria.
Aspartame is broken down in the digestive system into phenylalanine among other things and people with PKU cannot assimilate it.
It is worth noting that phenylalanine occurs naturally in many protein-rich foods, such as milk, eggs and meat. Table-top sweeteners containing aspartame or aspartame-acesulfame K must be marked with "contains a source of phenylalanine".
I don't drink diet drinks as I don't like them, not because of aspartame.

It’s difficult to exclude it. I was looking for some cans of lemonade. We don’t drink a lot, but it’s nice to have in for when you want a mixer. There were cans of Diet drinks, but there seemed to be no normal cans. Also if you want a bottle of squash, most appears to contain sweeteners. As Squiffy said, why not make it less sweet?

My husband hates anything artificial and has been wary of aspartame for years, mind you he feels the same about margarine. My pet hate is plug in air freshener. One of the best ways of getting something into your system is up your nose. I’d put money on finding out somtime in the future that they cause health problems. I’m not a lover of talcum powder either. Anyway Menopaws I digress thanks for the warning.

It gives me the jitters. I have not consumed it for a very long time. A friend of mine's uncle invented the stuff and he is laughing all the way to the bank of course.

Pittcity me too, I get a headache. Apart from.that, I can't stand the taste of the damn stuff. I used to.be fooled for ages by the "No added sugar" on the labels until I realised that is code for "Contains sweetener".

I suffer badly if I inadvertently have anything containing artificial sweeteners. It's surprising how many foods and drinks contain them. Even the non diet versions. Since the "sugar tax" came along even my favourite Ribena and instant hot chocolate have changed recipes with real sugar being replaced with artificial.angry

I can never understand why 'low sugar' often means adding artificial sweeteners instead. Why not just make things less sweet?

I quite agree and only wish my DD would take notice of me when I nag her. She does not drink tea or coffee so diet cola is her go to drink.

I read a very interesting facebook share today about aspartame, the artificial sweetener. I have avoided it for years as a dangerous sugar replacement and this article reinforced that today. So many people are taking this in the form of diet soda, sweeteners and many food and drink ingredients. It is nasty nasty stuff and acts as a slow poison, showing itself in symptoms similar to MS, fibromyalgia, lupus etc.
All I'm saying here is take a minute to look into it and maybe you will recognise your own symptoms along the way. Of course there will be those promoting it but please take a minute to maybe think about trying time out from your diet drinks etc and see how you feel after the initial withdrawal period.
I will not be responding to those that slammed me last time I suggested a medical insight formed by my own opinion but if this enlightenment helps just one person then I will be pleased.
Surely the chance to possibly lose the side effects of this drug that may be blighting your life is worth a few minutes of research.
I have no idea how to get the article I read on here but there are several available online.
