At 75 I've just bought black needlecord dungarees which I could wear with an expensive Liberty printed silk blouse: but I haven't had the nerve yet. I'm worried people will think I'm mutton dressed as Lamb.

There's no such thing as a lesser VIP abbey - you are as important as anyone and in fact, why would you want to spend time with people like that? I hope you find another occasion to wear your lovely dress.

That's awful abbey. Could you host a party yourself and wear it? You could invite the lesser VIPs. I bet you'd have a much better time than at the formal one. What a cheek uninviting people

I bought a red dress for a Christmas Party because I was given a verbal invite. Now I find there were too many invited and as a "lesser VIP" I am off the official list. One wasted red dress , cost a fortune and it will never ever be worn by me now. I am just glad I found out about the bump off before I got all the accessories for it.

OK I wore it this weekend. It felt so unaccustomedly long! I'm usually on the bus or driving so I'll not wear it then.
I did notice a lady smiling at me though. (Were there any Grans on Peebles main street this morning?) I was a bit disconcerted. Not sure if she was laughing at me.

About 15 years I was given a long red coat with a black velvet collar. Friend bought too small a size and it was too good an item to hang unworn. Occasionally i find the black collar might be colour limiting so then I throw a nice big scarf about and conceal the black.

I just love it, so cheery. Even wearing it with jeans and trainers I feel glammed up. It looks 'classy' and as good as the day it was bought.

I have a winter coat I hardly ever wear. Its a wrap coaf with a big faux fur collar. We were fairly newly married when I got it - so 23 years ago. The style has been in and out of fashion a few times over the years.
I drive almost everywhere - so it's too big and bulky!! But I'll keep It...

That's me, Urmstongran - I have lots of lovely tops and 'bottoms' but not many go together, unless I wear black on one half. Someone told me once that you should never buy just one thing - get an outfit, and then it will be worn. 'Wish I remembered that when I came home last week thrilled with the jumper that goes with nothing.

I always buy on impulse when I think about it! Just about every purchase I make really, as if I’m strolling along past a shop and I see something I like, I go in! I’m not a big shopper to be honest. I’d hate the idea of going for a shopping trip with a friend. I go on my own if I ‘need’ something- in which case I’m on a mission to buy whatever it is and then I’m done. Spontaneous items just call out to me.... occasionally. That’s probably the reason why I’m not good at coordinating outfits. I often stand in front of the wardrobe wondering what I can wear with the new top that ‘called out to me’ when I spotted it in a shop window! You’d think at my age I’d have had it sussed by now. Seems not.

Oh how I wish I could walk past a shop, see something and buy it! I am disabled now and so shop online, and as I seem to have out grown my winter/funeral coat am searching for another - I now have a lounge with I think 8 coats in it, mostly unsuitable as they don't fit my now very peculiar shape due to 4 ruddy hernias! The one I really like is actually far too big (sizes just are not consistent are they?) but they have sold out of any smaller ones, but have been in touch with a seamstress who says she could do it for me quite easily and is reasonably priced .... oh the doorbell and another 3 coats have arrived! Ha, ha! I always try them when my neighbour pops round for coffee as I can trust her judgement!

Only thing is I do need to keep a track of my return parcels!

Wear the coat and enjoy, it will brighten up the winter.
All my purchases are impulse, if I see something in my size and I like it I buy it.

I bought a bright red raincoat this year from Next, I love it, daughter said if I stand still not to open my mouth as someone may post a letter!

? Genadier Guard! I bet it looks fab Jane. Be brave and I’ll wear the bright green coat I bought with a combination of Debenhams New Year sale price & Xmas vouchers. It’s lovely and warm and hanging in the wardrobe because makes me feel like a giant mushy pea!

I understand about living in anoraks. I am making myself wear my "best" coat because otherwise it's just a waste. I don't go out anywhere special so my little Coop gets to see it!

Impulse buys...hmmm. need to think as I don't get out now. I'll come back about it....

I bought a red coat on impulse a couple of years ago. Not sure why because red is not my best colour at all.I don’t wear it often ,but have decided that I do look ok in it sometimes.
Wearing a red jumper today and just don’t feel right in it ,although had a complement about it from a friend.
Back to another impulse buy tomorrow. - striped jumper in black,cream and mid pink. Much more me.

I've got a cherry red coat (long jacket) which I haven't worn for a few years, perhaps I may pull it out from the back of the wardrobe.

I love a red coat. I have several. Such a lovely colour & I think they lift your spirits.

I can honestly say I've never bought clothes on impulse, nearly everything in my wardrobe is from charity shops. But housewares are different, I went in for a book & came out with a sale dining table & chairs. Then a couple of years ago I stopped on my way to the bus to look at the " clearance" outside a posh furnishers, Bought the most fabulous pair of heavy lined curtains for our lounge bay window at 80% off. Every morning as I fasten the gold rope tie-backs I smile at how good they look!

I've admitted the pink dress, but I'd forgotten the poncho that lurks at the back of my wardrobe. It looked such a good deal- East label on it, and £5 on EBay. It's heavy. off white, Indian cotton weave and rather ornate. I have never worn it and if you see it back on Ebay, please think about buying it!
