Impulse buys and do you regret them?

Jane, had a little smile because I did something similar this week, saw this really nice ( I thought so) coat in a local shop, notHobbs , not Harrods, not Joules, but Morrisons, it went in the trolley with the groceries and I love it!!!

I bought a bright orange winter coat a couple of years ago or so. Didn't need it, but I was so taken by the colour. Hung it up in the spare room for a couple of weeks and was going to take it back. However, I didn't, and am so glad; it really brightens up a dull winter day like today.

Two things I bought in Cheltenham last January and regret both! A make up compact by Chanel, lovely box but the foundation therein hardly covers anything. The saleslady did warn me but I wouldn't listen. Cost about £35. And in the Radley shop a small shoulder bag in the sale, reduced to about £90! Barely holds anything and used once. Why did I bother?

Thirty years ago a friend said "You cannot walk out of this shop without them." It was a pair of high heeled turquoise sandals. I couldn't walk in them but goodness I've had my moneysworth. Whenever I opened my wardrobe door there they were on a shelf. A dream of another me! Last month they went to a charity shop. Yesterday's dreams for me but tomorrows for someone else. I hope she gets as much pleasure from them.

You should take it back, get a refund, give the money away and immediately begin some serious self flagellation.

Funnily enough I wrote an article on my blog this morning, about older ladies should be wearing brighter colours. Men too.

I bought a lovely red coat in the sale from Next some years ago and I get more compliments when I am wearing that coat than any other ones I own. Yesterday someone in the park said I looked like Little Red Riding Hood which made me laugh. I think when it's dull and bleak outside it's lovely to wear a bright coat.
I saw a lovely mustard scarf and matching gloves in JL today and was tempted to buy them to compliment the coat but had already spent too much money so decided not to.

I saw the Jeanne Robertson clip about not sending your husband to the store, it is hilarious. A really funny lady.

I totally sympathise Jane10 - I’m guilty of having done this a few times. Ironically, I can even see a pattern in my impulse buys and still can’t stop myself! The pattern is that I’m drawn to flowy, hippy-style (linen in the summer / wool in the winter) dresses with asymmetric hems and dropped waists ( ?Lagen look), giant pockets, etc. I love them - but rarely wear them - can’t seem to carry them off! One I kept and wear on holiday, one’s in the wardrobe, waiting for me to be brave, one sold on eBay.

Many years ago, when i was young and slim, I had a red coat with black trimmings that I adored. Now that I am a lot plumper, and still only 5ft tall, I wouldn't consider wearing bright red. People would probably come along and stuff letters in my mouth!

Some years ago I bought on impulse a red Tommy Hilfiger pure wool duffle coat.
I never wore red but if it lasts as long as my last winter coat did it will certainly "see me out" as they say.
I still get people asking from where I bought it.

My problem is I put stuff away to wear 'for best' and then never wear them. Two Christmases ago my husband bought me a beautiful royal blue coat from M and S (I chose it!). It is lovely and when I did do wear it I gets lots of compliments so this year I have bought it downstairs and put it with my other, every day coats. Now I intend to wear it MORE OFTEN!!
My worst impulse buy was a tumble dryer. It seems that most things can't go in it.......only towels, and they take ages! So a big mistake

Wear it with pride Jane10. I have four red coats (different lengths and styles) bought over the last 30 years, and whenever I wear one I get compliments, and people say how warm and cheerful I look. I still enjoy wearing each of them and can't bear to part with any one . Maybe I'm a red coataholic!

Wear the coat with pride! There are lots of brightly coloured coats in the shops at the moment. I wish I could wear red - I would buy one!

That was a bit harsh, mabon for a lighthearted thread; jane might have paid very little for the coat, as impulse does not equate with vast spending.

Ah that must be the infamous mabon1 commenting. Sorry for being 'ridiculous'. Obviously, I'm rolling in money so can easily waste it on an impulse! It was an impulse OK? That's why I posted asking if people ever regretted impulse buys.

I resist impulse buys. Then I regret not buying them, when I decide to buy it and go back to find they're sold out.

I sometimes appear to be buying something on impulse but it's mainly because I finally see what I've been looking for for ages and sort of gave up on.
I saw a fabulous grey coat in Tesco, only £29, longish, only drawback is it's what I call 'flippy-flappy' as no buttons. Felt very drawn to it so I bought it. I sewed a couple of ribbons on the front to fasten and I love it. It's a bit cold for it now but it'll come out again in the Spring. My main regret is that I didn't buy the dusky pink one too but if felt too self-indulgent.

I think you should wear it, jane10. I’m sure you’ll get lots of compliments. Also, as other posters have said, it’s such a cheerful colour to wear on cold, dismal days.

I bought a lovely orange wool coat from M and S about 4 years ago on impulse even though I never wear full length coats. I wear it a lot as the bright colour is cheerful on dull winter days. Enjoy wearing your coat Jane10- never say never and the coat obviously chose you to wear it!
