Who ‘dresses’ you?

I do some voluntary work and have recently become quite friendly with another female volunteer about my age (I’m 70) - we’ve been for coffee a couple of times. Yesterday, over coffee, I admired her top - “ Oh”, she said, “yes, I like it now too - but when B (her husband) suggested I buy it, I wasn’t sure”. She went on to say she always took his advice on clothes and never bought anything that he didn’t like. I was quite surprised / not sure what to think about that - partly because my husband giving fashion advice is a very alien concept grin, and partly because she seems a very strong independent person. Obviously you can be strong and independent and still take advice..... I have to say she always looks good!
Do you run clothes choices by your partner?

Didn't Mary Berrys husband say he didn't like her wearing trousers in the evening.....presumably when they are enjoying their Campari.

My long-term memory is legendary. It keeps mrA in line, oldbatty wink

Yes, he did, oldbatty

What a dinosaur.

The only piece of fashion advice my DH has ever given me is, 'Never wear pink.'

He was right. I looked like death warmed up!

DH never comes clothes shopping with me and very rarely notices if I am wearing something new. (On the positive side he never minds how much I spend!)

It has become a running joke in our family that he always buys me an item of clothing for Christmas and I nearly always take it back! I know husbands are renowned for choosing inappropriate clothing -but it's usually skimpy undies - mine buys me frumpy cardigans and Fairisle sweaters from M&S! I ask him - is this what you think I should be wearing?

I beg him to stop doing it, but he seems to think it's funny. Last year I insisted that he queued up for an hour in the post-xmas M&S queue to return the blasted thing, so I think that may have cured him!

Just on my way home from the city centre having thoroughly enjoyed a proper shopping on my own. I work in a charity shop where most of my wardrobe comes from. We get a lot of very good quality hardly worn items in. But today I decided to really treat myself just for once and visited all the high end shops to update my winter wardrobe with brand new clothes. I've spent a guilty fortune blush. But he'll never think these things are expensive as I'm always so frugal and wouldn't know Hobbs from Primark.
I will run them by him though and appreciate his opinion. He has a good eye for what suits me.

Once inside the clothes shop my husband is off like a rocket. He whizzes round and returns with the only things in the shop that are worth having. I'm still browsing the first couple of garments. He's rarely wrong. Let out alone I buy shiny things party

He has a knack of getting style and interior decorating just spot on. The useful comments he comes out with I swear he should be charging for advice.

In answer to the question Who dresses you ? No one dresses me I have my own tastes and wouldn’t want anyone else to suggest what I wear I ve never been with a man who has taken much interest in women’s clothes although I ve been given compliments I can’t think of any man who se been clothes shopping with me

No, I would not look to clothing advice from DH and he would not want to give it. Sometimes I go shopping with DD and seek her advice if I am uncertain, but my clothing disasters are all my own.

However, my sister's DH is a graphic designer and has a very good eye for anything involving design; work, house, garden, clothes. He doesn't dress her. She makes the decisions, but she trust's his judgment, and she does always look very nice.

I think all men should have been women in a former life, and all women men. Then we would know what was expected of us in just about every aspect of our relationship! Especially fashion! Yes, daft, I know!

The only clothes other people (men) have chosen for me have been a wet look bra with zip up cups, in about 4 sizes too small.
A huge bulky, itchy jumper with a snow covered cottage embroidered on the front and penguins playing outside.
A pair of high heeled boots (I only wear flats) with big legs, which made a ridiculous clapping noise when I walked.

Polly48 Sat 10-Nov-18 19:26:09

MissAdventure smile - did you wear those 3 items together? grin

janeainsworth Sat 10-Nov-18 21:10:37

Strange taste in men missA grin

I make my own choices so I dress myself.. DH is a thoughtful gift buyer and he knows the shops I prefer so if he ever buys me a clothes gift he will go to those shops and remember an item I have talked about. Usually he makes a great choice under my distant guidance grin He can look super smart and attractive but he has several badly fitting jackets and often wears very odd outfits .... he always has but I love him anyway!

Jalima1108 Sat 10-Nov-18 23:21:30

Are these men still in your life MissA?

(if so, we will come and rescue you)

The only time I can remember is when my DD got married and DH came along to the shop "just for a look". He pulled out a lovely beaded outfit which I'd never have chosen myself.....I tried it on and loved it. I ended up being a very confident "mother of the bride" in that lovely outfit.

LullyDully Sun 11-Nov-18 08:11:05

In the 70s my husband helped me choose my wedding outfit from Jaegar. It looked good and the " bad luck " didn't come as we have been happy for 42 years. Did have something borrowed etc of course.
