After tea Susi got out her knitting, tucking it carefully into the folds of her cardigan, hoping her visitor wouldn't notice the dark splashes of blood.
"I hope you don't mind me asking," she said, "but would you tell me the name of your dentist, please, your teeth are so white".

Re your message sarahellenwhitney here where I live we put out a pumpkin ( real or plastic) or other Halloween decorations if we are happy to have Trick or Treaters call. No one calls at a house that doesn't have these on show so no problem for elderly or vulnerable. I have no answer to the problem with fireworks going off at all times over the October / November period other than they shouldn't be sold to anyone other than organisers of proper licensed displays.

Halloween and Guy Fawkes should be banned. What does it signify ?Just an opportunity to scare the vulnerable by knocking on their doors with your painted faces suggesting a trick or treat and the fifth of November frequently causing injuries from fireworks and the distress to defenceless animals by the bangs that go off from the moment it becomes dark.

Green snot pie,
All mixed up with a dead dog`s eye,
Slap it on a butty, nice and thick,
And wash it all down with a cup of cold sick.

(Apologies, my hubby`s favourite yucky verse!)

But I am partial to bowl of toadstool and green custard before I visit uncle Fester.

“Where’s my dinner ?!” Said a small black cat sat in the window, he was dribbling eyeing the crows flapping and squawking in the creaky old oak tree.

'Oh, dear, have you got a sore throat?' asked Susie, who'd arranged this date online - she hadn't wanted to go alone to the Halloween party. 'I must say, that's a jolly good Dracula outfit! Much more authentic than the usual cheap old thing!'

He said in raspy voice .

They hid in doorways while the rain lashed the streets and gas lights flickered in the howling wind.

In the door way stood a small hunched figure silhouetted by the small gas light on the wall behind

The figure raised it's hand towards the knocker but as it did so the door opened with an ominous creak.
