A new £50 note will be rolled out in 2020.

Whose face should be on it ? There are suggestions it should be Margaret Thatcher

I think Aneurin Bevan

Jennifereccles my sentiments exactly, whoever they choose let’s hope it’s someone worthy regardless of gender.

I was thinking of Cecelia Payne - but she did go to live in America as she was not recognised here for her brilliant work.

Oops. Just read that a Turner painting is going to be on the new £20 note.

"knowing that "

EllanVannin Fri 19-Oct-18 12:12:48

How about Laurel and Hardy ? Afterall,it's a joke knowing at £50 has lost more than lost its full worth over the years .

Funny Money--------worthless since decimalisation.

Some are suggesting David Bowie !

mcem You are quite right and I apologise, I should have said Britain not England.

Regarding Prince Philip, aside from him being still alive, I don't see why anyone should get a special reward for supporting their spouse, surely that should be a given, not anything out of the ordinary.

I see merit in the unknown soldier but I would rather celebrate the arts than the military. What about Gainsborough or Turner, surely that is long enough ago not to be controversial, if we don't know what they looked like we could have one of their paintings.
Or rather more recent how about Laurence Olivier or Richard Burton, Margaret Lockwood or Alfred Hitchcock.

I don't think it should be any politician as that would be too divisive, particularly one as "Marmite" as Margaret Thatcher.

I am remembering the 1960s where £11 per week paid the rent (it must have included rates), the electricity and some food - with £1 left over for makeup ,tights etc.

It's not us who are going wrong,Jalima1108 smile)

I would suggest Mr. Micawber, but apparently fictional characters are not allowed.

Anniebach Fri 19-Oct-18 09:15:26

I couldn’t pay one weeks rent with £50, I could try but eviction doesn’t appeal to me.

Jalima1108 Thu 18-Oct-18 23:20:34

I could pay all my major monthly bills with just one £50 note and still have enough for couple of lottery tickets.
Where are we going wrong?

mcem Thu 18-Oct-18 22:38:10

Wow GG! How do you manage that? I' d love to know where just council tax is that low!
Or are you referring to times past?

GabriellaG Thu 18-Oct-18 22:21:08

I could pay all my major monthy bills with just one £50 note and still have enough for couple of lottery tickets.

I really like the idea of the Unknown Soldier as a tribute to all our brave servicemen.

Barmeyoldbat Thu 18-Oct-18 17:47:11

Cant remember when I last saw a £50 note so I don't really care who is on it.

Anniebach Thu 18-Oct-18 17:23:09

Lesley, they have to be dead. Florence Nightingale, Elizabeth Fry, Jane Austen were female.

Jalima1108 Thu 18-Oct-18 17:21:51

I hope mine's not a forgery!

Legs55 Thu 18-Oct-18 17:09:14

I used to get quite a lot of £50 notes when I worked as I used them for paying bills. Haven't had one for ages. There has been problems with forgeries but the new polymer note will have lots of new security features.

Do I want a £50 note, yes please I'd happily have a sack full, all donations will be gratefully receivedgrin

lesley4357 Thu 18-Oct-18 16:54:27

Probably be another dead white man

Sararose Thu 18-Oct-18 16:50:18

I sell clothes at car boot sales and a customer tried to pay me with a £50 note! That is the only time I have seen one and of course I refused it!

Lilyflower Thu 18-Oct-18 16:03:40

The Queen is already on very banknote but it would be jolly to have Her consort on the reverse.

(Wow! Autocorrect gave me a capitalised pronoun when I typed the Queen.)

maryhoffman37 Thu 18-Oct-18 14:43:09

I've signed the petition for Noor.

sluttygran Thu 18-Oct-18 14:42:37

The Queen is already on all our notes, so it’ll have to be someone else.
We’ve had Florence Nightingale, but another great lady in nursing was Mary Seacole, who has remained largely unacknowledged.

Jalima1108 Thu 18-Oct-18 14:29:36

I was given one as a present but just haven't been able to spend it - not that I haven't wanted to buy something with it, but once it's gone, it's gone as they say

Actually, I don't know who's on it
