Unusual jobs

My gd was sent to a Saturday circus school as she was a child that liked to climb. She started main school being able to ride a unicycle. Anyway, I always wanted to build stone walls, it a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle but heavier.

Alas PECS it would have to be a trapeze artist in a virtual circus, or McAlpines could hoist me up on a crane! Though I know some people would pay good money to see that.
I'm very much enjoying this thread hearing of others yearnings and secret selves. I wonder if young people today are having to stifle their dreams because of economic anxiety or lack of opportunities?

I don't know who I thought was doing all these unusual jobs eg drystone walling, clowns etc - but it never occurred to me to purse any of them!!

milliemouge I worked in "Ely's of Wimbledon" the summer before college. We had those vacuum whooshy cannisters to send money direct to the accounts dept!

I once wanted to be a Norland Nursey Nurse & get a job on a ship. Perfect combo of working with kids & travel! I did have a place to train..parents prepared to cough up...then I took a closer look at the uniform

My DH used to tell people he was an apprentice tea stirrer's mate for some bizarre reason.

* katy* that reminds me of the time my froend & I were Saturday Job hunting. We had not been successful but on Monday, back in school we announced we had got a job ay Frederick Paine learning how to engrave memorial plaques for the crem!

My parents told me that the only respectable professions that were available to me were Lawyer, Architect, Doctor, Accountant or Engineer at a push journalist or translator! I opted for law but secretly wished I had been a writer although I suppose it’s not too late ?

I would have loved to go to Art School , but the teacher told me I had a slight talent !!!!! what a put down after being top of the class all through school . The Head (Nun) told my mum I was too bad tempered to be a teacher , probably true , so I ended up a Physiotherapist , where patience and understanding were sort of needed lol I loved working with people even though I am basically shy

My DH was advised by his careers teacher to become an Instrument Articifer! He never knew what it was, and fortunately ignored the advice and started working towards a career in the (then) very new IT industry. He loved every day of his career.

I can't see what is wrong with that myself, but each to their own.

Never too late jenpax My father was a barrister but would have preferred to have been a writer or an artist. He did paint and write..once we, his kids, were old enough to allow some space in his life.

I was offered teaching or secretarial training by the careers officer. I wanted to go to medical school, but no way was my dad going to allow that, so I settled for nursing, and I’m glad I did. It was a wonderful career, and now retired I have happy memories.
One thing I did learn during my training was how to handle and apply leeches.
We were told that the treatment was outdated, but it was on the syllabus so we jolly well learned it.
My leech was called Archie - a dear little beastie, he was.
Anyway, leeches are now a very modern and useful treatment prescribed by many doctors, so leech trainers are obvhyiously needed badly!

When at infant school my ambition was to work behind either the sweet or the biscuit counter in Woolworths.
I went on to do admin, then accounts and finished up owning a very successful tea shop with my partner.

I was told in primary school that I was not as clever as my sisters. One was a shorthand typist, the other one was a nursery nurse. I became a trained nurse RGN and RFN. I loved my work and worked happily until I was 68. So I didn't do too badly.

I wanted be a pearl diver in our local canal but sadly funding dried up
