Pressure Sore?!

(44 Posts)

I recently made a thread asking for recommendations for comfortable shoes.
I went ahead and bought some hotter ones, which felt like heaven - apart from one strap which felt a tiny bit uncomfortable.
A bit like when a nylon label rubs on a jumper or top.
I checked, and it hadn't made a blister, but my foot ached a bit, so I presumed the strap would loosen a bit, and wore them the next day.
Now I have what I think is a pressure sore on my foot!
Is this possible?!

MiniMoon Fri 05-Oct-18 17:19:28

It could be. Pressure damage can be caused in as little as five hours.
Here is a description of a stage one pressure ulcer.

Stage 1 sores are not open wounds. The skin may be painful, but it has no breaks or tears. The skin appears reddened and does not blanch (lose colour briefly when you press your finger on it and then remove your finger). In a dark-skinned person, the area may appear to be a different colour than the surrounding skin, but it may not look red. Skin temperature is often warmer. And the stage 1 sore can feel either firmer or softer than the area around it.

I hope it isn't, pressure ulcers take time to heal.

I think its more like a stage 3! My foot is hot, aching, and the skin is open in quite a hole.
I'm shocked, to be honest.

you need to get the DistrictNurse to look at it , it sounds very serious sad

MiniMoon Fri 05-Oct-18 17:30:28

It could also be cellulitis. The bacteria that causes it can get into your skin through the tiniest of scrapes that you wouldn't necessarily notice.
In either case the sooner you get treatment, the better. See a GP directly.

I've made a docs appt, but not until next Wednesday.
I hate going to the doctors, but well, sepsis is a consideration.
I was just stunned when I took the plaster off on the second day.

silverlining48 Fri 05-Oct-18 17:39:18

MissA. Cellulitis, which I have at present, a very painful condition needs anti biotics as soon as possible. I am on my second lot of 2000mg per day and things not really improving. Try and get medical advice.

aggie Fri 05-Oct-18 17:41:20

Sorry , don't want to be alarmist , but you need it looked at sooner than Wednesday

MiniMoon Fri 05-Oct-18 17:42:25

MissA next Wednesday is too long to wait. Please ring them back and tell them it's an emergency. Your foot sounds infected if it's hot, throbbing and the skin is tight and shiny.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Oct-18 17:44:04

Oh, I don't know anything about cellulitis. I may have to try and get an emergency appt before.
Thank you all. I'll keep an eye on myself.

Eglantine21 Fri 05-Oct-18 17:52:01

If it’s hot and throbbing, A &E.

Tonight!

I mean it!

UsedtobeGinger Fri 05-Oct-18 17:55:49

I presume that like me, MiniMoon has a medical background, totally agree that you need to be seen soon.
Hope you don't have Diabetes.

dustyangel Fri 05-Oct-18 17:58:13

I don’t want to be scary but my Dad developed gangrene as a result of a small cut on his foot. Don’t leave it.

Izabella Fri 05-Oct-18 18:12:55

Right neither a GP or District Nurse is relevant here at a weekend. You need to get to A/E as it sounds from your description as if you need intravenous antibiotics. Just get a move on (meant kindly) and sort this out. Take an overnight kit in case. Draw a biro line at the furthest red bit too so they can judge the spread from the time you drew the line. I dealt with such scenarios many times as an RN and the sooner the better is best practice. Let us know how you get on

silverlining48 Fri 05-Oct-18 19:01:14

Yes the biro is a good idea to show spread, I did that last time i had it. Of course it may not be cellulitis, hope it isn’t, but needs watching.
Take care.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Oct-18 19:06:05

Thank you all.
You're all very kind.
(But you don't half nag!) smile
P.S - I like it really. Its nice to have people who are bothered enough to nag.

MissAdventure.... it is highly unlikely that you've got a pressure sore.

If you have got Diabetes, any sore or scrape would take a little longer to heal that someone without Diabetes.

I'm 59, have not got Diabetes, and I had a sore part on my heel from where a shoe had rubbed. I had a blister-type wound there, which took about 3 weeks to heal completely.

Don't be alarmed by some of the replies on here, but do get it looked at. Let us know how you get on.

BlueBelle Fri 05-Oct-18 21:33:05

Misadventure I had cellulitis last year simply from itching a toe I didn’t even realise I d opened the skin a tiny bit when scratching it In a very short space of time I had a climbing red swelling half way up my leg went to doctors told it was cellulitis and had a felt tip pen mark the red area a couple of days hence redness and swelling up to my knee put on stronger anti biotics woke up next day it was half way up my thigh and I was sent off to hospital for an anti biotic drip, after that it gradually retreated but very scary as I could almost watch it climbing up my leg

MissAdventure Fri 05-Oct-18 21:37:10

It doesn't feel like a blister, it actually aches.
Would anyone mind if I posted a pic?
(I'm one of those annoying people who goes on about their ailments, it seems!)grin
I'm thinking cellulitis may be the culprit.

MiniMoon Fri 05-Oct-18 21:57:29

MissA go ahead and post a picture. My DH has had cellulite in his knee recently. I know exactly what it looks like. I have also nursed people with pressure ulcers so I'm very familiar with those too.

Overthehills Fri 05-Oct-18 22:01:31

MissA - you’re not listening! I have no experience of this but others have so listen to them! Meant very kindly!

MissAdventure Fri 05-Oct-18 22:03:29

Hope this works.

silverlining48 Fri 05-Oct-18 22:20:11

It does look sore. If the red bit around the outside of the wound starts to increase in size mark the diameter with a Biro. If it stays the same then you are probably ok. If it gets bigger seek medical help.
I would Photo mine but it’s hiding under one of my tummies so a bit awkward. Am hoping I won’t need to go fir a third round of anti biotics. Take care.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Oct-18 22:22:18

grin
One of your tummies?
I really will take care.
I'm going to show the pharmacist tomorrow.
Hopefully he'll have some good advice.

MiniMoon Fri 05-Oct-18 22:24:16

This looks like cellulitis to me. You need to see a doctor in the morning, and get antibiotics. Please don't wait any longer than that. flowers
I hope you manage some sleep.
