He was an officious type, wasn't he? It'll make you think twice before doing this again but don't let if put you off being kind. In one of my local towns we did this all the time and nobody thought anything of it - it was just what we did.

I would have replied to him that you will offer it to someone more grateful and you are glad that he hadn't accepted it now! You had paid for a space for a car for a certain time and it shouldn't matter what car is in that space if there is time left. Who cares if it's illegal; some rules are stupid and should be challenged. You'd probably get a lesser fine if you'd stabbed someone these days for all the police and courts care!!! Easy pickings is the name of the game in these modern times.

All councils and private companies are just out to rip you off and then complain more people shop on line. Luckily, my local council offers an annual parking clock for about £20 for local residents. You can use it an unlimited about of times for under 3 hours in each car park anywhere within your council tax area so local high streets are well used. My daughter buys me one every year as part of my Christmas present and, as it has no identifying features on it, I can let family borrow it too.

I do it all the time and take tickets if they are offered to me.

What a brilliant idea about the annual parking clock, QQ. Wish our council would implement something similar. We do get the first two hours free parking though so I suppose we must be thankful for small mercies.

My aunty got a fine from taking someone else's ticket!! He shouldn't have spoken to you like though, there are nicer ways of saying no thank you

Just to point out that this sort of petty, official bullying is what we will all be in for in every area of our lives if people are foolish enough to vote for the extreme left candidate in the next election.

Quizqueen, where do you live? Will be moving there pronto! Sometimes tickets are transferable, you just have to read the small print. We recently used the carpark for Lindisfarne castle and as we hadn't used up all the time, passed it on to another motorist who was very grateful. Had quite a bit of money on it so was hoping she was going to offer part of the cost but no such luck! Still, it was my good deed for the day. Hate the ones which require you to put registration number in too.

If, as you wrote, it was a virtually empty car park, why did you park next to a car which was parked at a 'wonky angle'? It makes no sense to do that, as you must have noticed when driving into the space.

The powers that be may well say that tickets are not transferable. However, I take the view that when one is purchased, a parking space has been rented for that period of time. If the renter is leaving with time remaining, it’s quite reasonable to pass it on! I have never been one for blindly obeying rules. I feel that if we all did that, the path could lead to Orwell’s 1984!

Day6 I would not mention that it was an almost empty car park as there would be no reason that you had to park over the line because of the car in the next bay.

If someone tried to induce me to break the law I would be angry. I wouldn't know if you were a habitual lawbreaker, or perhaps an undercover cop.

I always pass my ticket to someone else if there's time left on it. It's just the done thing isn't it? That man was rude. Please don't let him annoy you, and keep on what you've been doing.

Its being illegal does not make it wrong. Legality is not the same as rightness where real ethics are concerned.

I have on occasion offered and accepted the odd ticket, but I know that the wardens are ever more eagle eyed (photographing number plates) and I imagine OP while meaning well, was unaware she was both in danger of a penalty for herself and the other driver.
However, each to their own. I don’t go a bundle on self righteous lexicographical rectitude myself.

QQ and Blinko we had annual car park passes which allowed us to park for 2 hours in any of our local council car parks but then the local traders didn't like that visitors had to pay about 50p an hour and got it changed. They seemed to think that visitors wouldn't come if they had to pay more to park although I have never checked the cost of parking when visiting a pretty town. The result was that our annual ticket cost went up by 60% so I didn't buy one and went less often into town to shop.

You couldn't do that where I live as you have to put your registration number into the machine before parking.

Car parks and their charges can be the biggest scam out.
But here's the reverse; I frequently park in Wimborne town centre: 60p for one hour, 70p for two, and a colossal 80p for three hours. Which is why I do most of my shopping in Wimborne if possible.
