My dad loved the army. He had a terrible upbringing and joined in 1939 at just 19. He said it was the first time in his life that he had a pair of boots and the first time he was not hungry. Despite his upbringing he was a loving father, very involved in caring for my brother and myself
Mother was very different. Quite hard and manipulative. She was 16 when the war started. She said it gave them freedom that they had not enjoyed before. She never settled to being a housewife. She worked full time from when we were toddlers. She had quite a vicious tongue. My Nan lived with us and between the two of them, my Dad never stood a chance. Nothing he did was ever right, yet he was such a caring person. He worked shifts and cooked and cleaned . Sadly he died very young.
