Likewise with smokers; if the doc asks "how many a day? and you answer "half a pack", he'll write "1 pack" in your notes. Same with booze; "you say only social; he'll write "only sociable when he's drinking"! .

terribull; Sorry! it was tongue-in-cheek of course, but I was getting nervous, with a feeling that an anti- Royalist gang was lining me up for a bit of bullying! so I was working out how many supporters I'll have if it comes down to hand-to- hand combat. Neutrals are fine!

Terribull; Sorry I couldn't get back to you yesterday. It was one of those Mondays; one disaster after another!
Before today starts to go wrong, here's that website that Jalima mislaid. koalanet.com.au I printed it off, 4xA4 pages of slang terms and I think I used up all of them yesterday. My main problem stemmed from breaking a cardinal rule; drinking and computing don't mix; I'd successfully negotiated to my desk-top PC with half a glass of Shiraz, set it down and myself ready to go, realised I needed something from the desk behind me, turned round and "Wham", the Shiraz went all over the keyboard. What a waste! . It hasn't worked since! I thought "no problem", I'll use my Win10 comp. which I rarely do because I'm used to this Win7, but it needed a different p/word to access Forums. Of course, the link from HQ didn't work; I used up the rest of koalanet, went to bed feeling that my alter ego was Ivan the Terrible. Let's hope for some success this time. .

Hi Rufus, I'm not sure what do you mean whose side? I'm not particularly anti royalist, just neutral. Hope the Pommies bath towel remark didn't come across as anti Australian, definitely not, like all the Australians I've met, we have some in the family, also enjoyed my time there.

Terribull; Nearly right! The expression is "this arvo"! If you're really interested, I emailed a 4page A4 doc listing Aussie slang terms to Jalima who has family connections out this way, and if you ask her nicely she might give you a copy, unless she's binned it in disgust! I'll await Jalima's comments, but I can email another copy if necessary. I never knew there were so many terms and I've lived here nearly 50 years, but not in the bush, otherwise I'd have heard most of them by now.

I remember Henry from Neighbours. Always liked him. He was great in the Dr Blake mysteries. That's one of my favourite programmes. I gather he's out of favour right now but not sure why.

I also remember when I was in Australia in my younger days, there was a saying that I think Australians liked to let Brits know about "as clean as a Pommie's bath towel" doesn't apply to me, I hasten to add!

I haven't watched Neighbours for years but when I was a very new mum, I would sit down in the middle of the day to feed my baby and watch it it was a brand new show then. It's amazing how many of the cast went on to international fame. I did get quite hooked and particularly liked some of the Australianisms such as "the savo" for afternoon, "got a bluey" I assume which means depressed, "shot through" done a runner and best of all "rack off" a good substitute for the obvious I liked to share my new found knowledge with my Australian friend.
