On a practical note - Tesco ( I know I'm always on about them) sell 'erbs in pots.
When we were staying in eldest son's flat, April to June, I bought basil and rosemary plants in pots from them and replanted them in his little balcony garden. They did very well.

I'm surprised they mention erbs at all. Cooking in the USA seems to be of the "everything out of a packet variety." None of our relatives cook meals from scratch and even my Canadian lot use "erbs.!"

It's tuRmeric, one of my pet hates is tumeric.

I think it means grass (herbe) and the plural is herbs (herbes)

which could be a bit confusing if you want to put just one herbe in your casserole ...

Well I've been criticised on here and in RL for saying 'otel, but I've never heard of 'erbs! Except in French where it means grass.

My sister-in-law says "tumeric" and also "Or-bergine." Drives me nuts.

I think the problem is that the h on herb has migrated to the beginning of aitch. Perhaps it will move on to atishoo.

I have spent most of my life making sure I never drop an aitch, which is no mean feat, considering where I live.
I can't go back on it now and say 'ere, pass me the erbs'!

Gosh, didn't know there was an alternative pronunciation to 'herbs', other than in other languages.

If you watch an American cookery programme you'll see they often use erbs. Some are just about recognisable although they get the pronounciation wrong - like bayzil. Others have totally different names- like cilantro.

It doesn't annoy me quite as much as the astonishing amount of sugar they put in so many things.
