Names in fashion

There is a Dennis in my six-year-old GD's class. You don't see that much nowadays. There was one in my class in the 60s.

There were 3 girls called Valerie in my first year at grammar school, 2 called Jane. My name tells everyone that I was born in the 50's. My mum was Molly. Three of my granddaughters have Welsh first names with very English second names. The other two have traditional names. I do think that certain names tell when we were born.

My small grandson's friends are called Archie, Henry and Samuel (NOT Sam, it seems!) Two friends who have had GDs born this summer have both been surprised to hear that the babies were to be called Evelyn. I always thought it such a pretty name with handy variants - Eve, Evie, Lynn etc.
I must have been in the same class as you, wilygran - all those names (except Roma ) and we had two Patricias - another lovely name that seems to have been lost for ever - but who knows?

My DD and DSIL announced that they were going to name their first son Gus - about ten years before they had a baby. I admit to being mortified, but now that he is almost 6 years old, I couldn't imagine him being called anything else.

grannyactivist I think I was in your class too, I don't remember a Travis but we had a Tony otherwise same list. One of my DGS has just told his mother he intends calling his daughter if he ever has one, after my mother, she didn't like her name at all but I am keeping quiet as he is only 14. (the same is mentioned here).

My mum was called Dorothy and to my surprise that name has become fashionable again. My generation were called Pamela, Caroline, Edith, Stephanie, Lorraine, Patricia, Carol, Louise, to name but a few. I can see these names coming back anytime soon.

My grandmothers names were Lily and Eva which have both come around again.

There were Amy's, Sarah's and Anne's in my family .
These names are still around but not as many as the Poppy's and EllieMay's I seem to hear of.

I'm an under 60 (56) Patricia. I was at school in the 60s and 70s and we had lots of Gillians, Karens,Janices,Janet's etc. I read an article several years ago that said we were coming up to an time where people couldn't lie about their ages as a lot of names were specific to a certain few years i.e. Charlene and Kylie. My nephews partner is 25 and called Christine which is unusual as it tends to be an older females name. My niece is Rachel as it's a family name but she was named at a time when there were a lot of girls being called Rachel

Sixties names Debbie, Deborah, Karen, these haven't come back as yet

Where my mother got my name from I will now never know. In the 40s it was very unusual and often commented on. I never met another girl with the same name until the 70s. Now I have heard and seen it quite often.
A few years ago in a supermarket, a young child was running around. Her mother called her 'B....., come here. ' I answered and we did laugh. Though I think said Mum thought the name was trendy and didn't ought to belong to a 70year old.

In a restaurant recently I heard a mum address her small daughter as Penelope. That's another name not often heard now.

you know when your name has come back when you see it on a mug, key-ring or nameplate in Clinton cards or similar shop. I have not seen a Carol for years!
I don't like my name much but I positively HATE seeing it spelt with an E on the end!
One of our daughters was given quite a classic but quite an unusual name at the time. Very annoyed to find that a few years later it became the most popular name in the country (well according to"The Times" )!

I've seldom come across another one of me - I'm Elaine, and I've always disliked it. In my class were Lynn, Anne, Lesley, Valerie, Susan, Naomi, Stanley, Ernest, Michael, William, Keith. William seems to have retained popularity but you never seem to see any of the others now.

A friend's grandchildren are Elsie, Felix and Gustav (Gus). Strangely they all suit their names!

I have a cousin named whose Christian names are Aston Martin. Weird.
One of my daughters is named Mercedes.
My paternal GM was Martha and my mother's name Issy (Isabella)
Harry, Charlie and James are all popular names where I live.
My name is my GN name. Family is Spanish/Italian/Irish...a real mix of straight talking and fire but we all love food.

My BFF at secondary school was Josephine, don’t hear that much these days.
I have a granddaughter called Florence (14 years ago it was unheard of, but more popular now) and another called Ada.

My mother had a friend who was Doris Morris, she lived in Corris!

I gather 'Mercedes' is a Spanish name for a girl - and very pretty too - and evidently years ago an employee of the company was asked to name a car and chose his daughter's name. Don't know how true that is!

I'm amazed that no one mentioned Marjorie/Margery. I knew many when I was at school. My name is Kathleen and there were three of us in my class - one spelt with a 'C', and others I knew of. I think it maybe was more popular in the north-east than the south.
My brother was Kenneth and my mother Agnes Caroline. She was known for years as Aggie but in later life asked to be called Agnes. I once asked her why she didn't choose to be known as Caroline and she said she didn't like it. To my mind it is much prettier than Aggie - or even Agnes.

I had cousins called Douglas, Marie, Margaret, Nevill, Brian, Ann and Susan.

My ex-husband is James Reginald after his dad. My sister-in-law is Shirley. Apart from James, not heard of today.
