How very very sad what a terrible shock for the family and such a tragedy
Am I being cynical again to think there is something strange going on here Their daughter says her parents were fit and well before they went on holiday The Egyptian authorities say they were elderly ( both in their 60 s) and the husband had a heart attack and the wife died of a broken heart !!! Ummmm

Have read in the news the daughter said there was a strange smell in the room the night before so perfume was sprayed to mask it but it didn’t work. When someone went into the room after the deaths they also smelt it,sorry, can’t remember now who it was.
Poor daughter though, hard losing one at a time but couldn’t have coped with two

Don’t know about Egypt but not all hotel windows do open.

PECS Sun 26-Aug-18 22:17:01

It is being suggested that it may have been a fault in air conditioning...odd smell in the room etc. Though I would think the windows might have been open ...

Yes, it's a bacterial infection and surely wouldn't cause sudden death as in these two cases.
I hope your DH is OK now dragonfly

It is very unlikely they died of Legionnaires disease. My husband has had it and the incubation period is about 10 days.

There will however always be the cheap and cheerful hidden away somewhere that escape the nets

I'm not sure that Thomas Cook would use cheap and cheerful hotels in Egypt.
Even upmarket hotels can have problems with hygiene - and, as Gabriella says, spot checks are better than pre-arranged H&S visits.

Something very odd there, I think, especially the reason given for the wife's death. Died of a broken heart, does this really happen that quickly? Only in romantic literature I think and as annep says, postmortems definitely needed.

There are things we're not being told!

callgirl1 Sat 25-Aug-18 17:20:18

Not criticising the Egyptian health authorities, but the post mortems did ought to be carried out by British forensic people, then nothing can be lost in translation.

pressed before I'd finished!!!! My sympathy to the daughter & family for their lossflowers

Elderly both in their 60's ? A no hoper for myself and others then way past this age.

I would imagine hotel health and safety rules are applicable in most countries There will however always be the cheap and cheerful hidden away somewhere that escape the nets.I can't imagine that particular hotel where this tragedy took place would not be advised when a check was to be made A 'spot check' clearly would be just that with no pre notification and could close them down if found to have a health and safety issue.

Jalima1108 Sat 25-Aug-18 16:37:54

I would bet a pound to a penny this was nothing to do with a broken heart the poor wife had barely found out her husband had died before she went too far too much of a coincidence
Oh yes, I agree Bluebelle - I was merely trying to explain that there is apparently a condition nicknamed that and I have known a couple of cases where one partner has died very shortly after another.
I'm not saying that this was the case here at all.

I hope that there is a properly conducted pm in this country and an inquest to find out the reasons why this double tragedy occurred.

My grandma's next door neighbours died within an day of each other. The wife rushed to my gran's house to say she thought her husband had died. Gran and another neighbour went next door to see him and call medical help. Sadly he had died. When they got back to gran's house the wife had suffered a heart attack and died later that day. It can happen! But it all needs proper investigation.

Bluebelle 'Same way' '? as in' I am going the same way as you'.
Post Mortem not Post motel

GabriellaG Sat 25-Aug-18 16:26:30

I wonder, was the hotel notified as to when the inspection would take place? Is that the general rule for all hotels?
I should imagine that giving a clean bill of health on 1 day a year, does not mean that it's upheld for the other 364 days.
I know that Macdonald hotels have, in the past, had a different attitude once the inspectors have left. Similarly, having your boiler serviced on one day a year does not mean that it's ok for the other 364, it merely means that on that day at that time, it passed muster.

Legs55 Sat 25-Aug-18 15:33:08

This is decidedly strange, fit & healthy couple in their 60s (not elderly, they were still working, lady worked for Thomas Cook in Burnley, the Branch where she worked was closed yesterday), daughter has arranged a private post mortem to be carried out. My sympathy to her

sarahellenwhitney Sat 25-Aug-18 15:29:34

Ready Meals .Didn't his wife die after her husband and not before????

sarahellenwhitney Sat 25-Aug-18 15:25:05

Well for sure there is going to be compensation if investigation shows the hotel responsible..
If they had taken out medical insurance they would have disclosed whether they had any medical problems and had sought medical advice prior to the holiday for that specific problem. Pay out depends on this
If death by a medical issue unrelated to that on the insurance then all expenses incurred by those ie relatives who are left to deal with these tragic circumstances will be paid for by the insurers.
I imagine that the company they booked through will leave no stone unturned.

I just hope the bodies are returned to uk and some extensive tests done I think legionnaires is a definite possibility but it would need a completely neutral examiner and unfortunately Egypt lives off tourism so I m not at all sure they would want to find out, much easier to say natural causes and broken hearts

Jalima1108 Sat 25-Aug-18 15:09:34

Whilst the heart does not literally break, there is such a thing as 'broken heart syndrome'
It turns out that a broken heart is an actual medical condition. Broken heart syndrome occurs during highly stressful or emotional times, such as a painful breakup, the death of a spouse, the loss of a job or extreme anger, said Loyola University Health System cardiologist Dr. Binh An P. Phan.
Broken heart syndrome also is called stress cardiomyopathy.

OldMeg Sat 25-Aug-18 15:06:15

Exactly Nannytopsy everyone dies because their heart stops beating or they stop breathing, and one usually precipitates the other.

Post-mortems don’t always reveal the cause of death either.

dumdum Sat 25-Aug-18 14:48:50

Awful thing to happen and what a shock for DD. DH and I were wondering if it was something like salmonella from badly prepared food. Apparently others had felt ill with stomach cramps etc.

Nannytopsy Sat 25-Aug-18 13:35:12

We all die of a stoppage of the circulatory system! What causes said stoppage is the important bit...

jenni123 Sat 25-Aug-18 13:20:45

The latest I read is that the travel co are moving people out of the hotel due to a food poisoning scare.
