How very very sad what a terrible shock for the family and such a tragedy
Am I being cynical again to think there is something strange going on here Their daughter says her parents were fit and well before they went on holiday The Egyptian authorities say they were elderly ( both in their 60 s) and the husband had a heart attack and the wife died of a broken heart !!! Ummmm

missdeke Sat 25-Aug-18 12:49:16

annep I wasn't trying to make anyone feel guilty, just to say even when you are feeling ill. it's so important to ensure whatever you have is not either infectious or due to an external problem to safeguard other holidaymakers. Whilst I was on holiday years ago I got Coli Campylobacter and it is a highly infectious disease, so much so that when I returned to the UK it had to be reported.

Nobody would purposely go out amongst others if they knew they were infected with something, so surely common sense would tell you that in a social situation like a hotel it's only common sense to ensure that you report illness to your holiday company.

There is in fact a particular condition known colloquially as Broken Heart Syndrome aka stress cardiomyopathy.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takotsubo_cardiomyopathy

It's such an awful story, the poor daughter must be reeling in shock.

ReadyMeals Sat 25-Aug-18 11:25:15

Yeah, but he died of a heart attack, probably provoked by his wife's death. All the same it was heart attack, not "broken heart"

Jalima1108 Sat 25-Aug-18 11:09:58

Broken heart isn't a medical condition. What nonsense gets into the news sometimes!
No, it's not, but we had a case in the wider family not long ago where the wife died and the, previously healthy, husband had a heart attack a couple of days later.

Jalima1108 Sat 25-Aug-18 11:08:21

I do hope that there will be a proper post-mortem and an inquest in the UK.

I have heard of cases like this where one partner has died and the other one shortly afterwards; perhaps both may have thought they were fit and healthy but had undetected problems. However, the fact that everyone else has been moved from the hotel and that there have been previous problems seem to be cause for suspicion.

The poor daughter, what a shock.

If similar situation had been in UK there would certainly be investigation and post mortum carried out. The woman apparently worked in a branch of Thomas Cook. So so sad for daughter. Hopefully if deceased are returned to UK there will be some medical investigations carried out.

From the NHS web site: “Legionnaires' disease is a lung infection you can catch by inhaling droplets of water from things like air conditioning or hot tubs. It's uncommon but can be very serious. You can catch Legionnaires' disease if you breathe in tiny droplets of water containing bacteria that cause the infection. It's usually caught in places like hotels, hospitals or offices where the bacteria have got into the water supply. It's very rare to catch it at home. You can catch it from air conditioning systems, spa pools and hot tubs, showers, taps and toilets.” If you have Legionnaire's you cant breathe properly, you have chest pain, you feel as if you have flu.

Seems very suspicious to me.

annep Sat 25-Aug-18 10:29:52

I don't think it's right to make people feel guilty missdeke. They probably felt they were doing the right thing.

cassandra264 Sat 25-Aug-18 10:24:24

Sounds very fishy to me, too, BlueBelle. Think it highly unlikely that the deaths were the result of any natural causes. I'd put money on faulty systems insufficiently well maintained. There was a programme on TV not long ago showing that the higher the star grading for hotel amenities, the more likely it was that standards for general cleanliness and repairs took a back seat......

missdeke Sat 25-Aug-18 10:08:19

Terribly sad when someone dies on holiday, having been a rep for 13 years I have dealt with families in such circumstances. Unexplained deaths are a different situation though and Thos Cook are merely being expedient by removing guests.

On the BBC news site this morning there was a video of another previous guest who said that they had been ill at the same hotel earlier this Summer. She said that they didn't inform the Thomas Cook rep as it was near the end of her holiday. Can I just point out that this is an extremely selfish thing to do, all guests should always inform their rep of any illness regardless of how badly, and when they are suffering, logs are kept and checked at least weekly to monitor any signs of a possible problem that may be emerging. This way epidemics can be averted, so please, any of you Gransnetters going abroad, keep this in mind should you be unfortunate enough to become ill, your rep is there to help you.

Just as an extra thought with the current tightening up of compensation claims after so many 'false' claims, if you have reported it in resort your claim will be dealt with much more quickly and sympathetically.

dogsmother Sat 25-Aug-18 09:46:10

Not cynical!
Why on earth move all the guests out? A tragedy, however sounds very suspicious to me and if they were my relatives I would want a whole lot more information.
In fact I think I would want PMs done in the UK.

Humbertbear Sat 25-Aug-18 09:42:52

And 40 more people in the hotel are now ill

annep Sat 25-Aug-18 09:31:36

Tragic. It does happen though. But postmortems definitely needed.

janeainsworth Sat 25-Aug-18 09:28:40

I'm not sure that just because someone tells their neighbour they are fit and well and because they are still working that means that they are actually fit and well.

Many self-employed people work long after they are really fit to do so, probably because they haven't made adequate pension provision and feel they can't afford to retire sad

Rosina Sat 25-Aug-18 09:24:42

It sounds like the worst kind of time for the daughter; whatever is thrashed out here about why they died and how, she has still lost both parents abruptly and will probably have a very bad time trying to recover from such a trauma. Poor lady.

BlueBelle Sat 25-Aug-18 08:22:41

Of course Harrigan occasionally very rarely, particularly very old people may die at similar times but come on if two of your family went away on holiday happy and healthy and both suddenly died of the same problem would you really think ‘well these things can happen no of course not
I would think their family are overcome with questions and grief
I don’t necessarily think anything criminal happened perhaps they both ate or drank something outside the hotel that inadvertently poisoned them Posioning could stop the heart and respiratory system It certainly doesn’t sound like food posioning (as in hotel food) as it was so instant no days of bad tummies or sickness and they ve ruled carbon monoxide out
What a tragic mystery
The daughter and family were staying at the same hotel
I hope the bodies are brought home for further post motels because I just wouldn’t trust cover ups of course for tourism needs the country can’t be seen to have deaths on its hands

harrigran Fri 24-Aug-18 23:11:22

Sudden deaths do happen together. We knew of a restaurant owner whose wife collapsed, he called an ambulance but by the time the ambulance arrived he was dead too. The inquest said she died of a heart attack and the shock caused him to die of a heart attack too, sadly they were only about 60.

Beau Fri 24-Aug-18 21:54:12

The lady who died worked for Thomas Cook so although complaints about this hotel apparently go back years, the 2 deaths have finally prompted them to remove all guests from this particular hotel. There were a lot of people very ill with food poisoning, not just this year but in past seasons too.

lemongrove Fri 24-Aug-18 21:53:45

It’s extremely suspicious!
A couple only in their sixties dying in the same manner together?

Charleygirl Fri 24-Aug-18 21:42:12

Why move the other British people out of that hotel if the couple died of natural circumstances? Very strange and I hope that the daughter keeps investigating.

sodapop Fri 24-Aug-18 21:19:53

Yes I've seen an update now BlueBelle it said they were in good health. Conflicting information. It seems even stranger now given that information.

Daddima Fri 24-Aug-18 18:42:47

According to newspapers ( I know, I know), the daughter was reported to have said, “ It was the air conditioning”.
A terrible tragedy for them all.

BlueBelle Fri 24-Aug-18 18:38:22

Going by what the daughter is quoted as saying Sodapop on ITv news tonight she said both my parents were fit and well before they went on holiday, neither had any health problems
A neighbour of the couple is quoted as saying He was a good builder still working and the neighbour suggested he should start thinking about retiring and his answer was not yet Im still fine and healthy ...this was just prior to their holiday

sodapop Fri 24-Aug-18 17:39:56

I'm not sure the man was fit and healthy BlueBelle apparently he was on medication and had several health issues.
This does not explain both sudden deaths though, other people in the hotel were said to be unwell also.
