I recently bought an album by the group 'Madness' and heard a song called " Shut Up "
It included one of the funniest lines that I have heard for a long time:

" I'm as honest as the day is long.
The longer the daylight , the less I do wrong".

So Gransnetters, the ball is now in your court. ??.

I love the King and I too. I love the March of the Siamese children.

Greyduster Sat 25-Aug-18 19:15:20

King and I takes a lot of beating. Something Wonderful and I Have Dreamed are two of my all time favourites.

KatyK Sat 25-Aug-18 19:12:16

Yes it reminded me of that one too Greyduster but I couldn't remember the words.

Greyduster Sat 25-Aug-18 19:11:05

misadventure Don’t Jump off the Roof reminded me of another bygone:

When Father papered the parlour
You couldn't see Pa for paste
Dabbing it here and dabbing it there
There was paste and paper everywhere
Mother was stuck to the ceiling
And the kids were stuck to the floor
You never saw such a bloomin' family
So stuck up before

Just the chorus - the rest is quite long!

I am off to see the King and I in London in a couple of weeks Pollyperkins. I LOVE this musical. Wish that I could have seen it when Yul Brynner was the star in the 60's. (He was one of the most gorgeous bald men ever ) ?.
I love all of the songs from that show.

Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right,
Here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you.

Jalima used to love Bubble Car song on Childrens Favourites, Saturday morning.( a few years ago)

pollyperkins Sat 25-Aug-18 17:49:48

Well I must admit I have never heard many of these songs. Clearly mg education is lacking. Two that I do remember and like are Windmills of your mind and The sound of silence.

As for the funny ones, I used to love the Bubble car song and also 3 wheels on my wagon.

My choices would be :

Whenever I feel afraid
I hold my head erect
And whistle a happy tune
So no-one will suspect
I'm afraid.
(From the Kng and I, I think.)

Most of my favourites are from the Beatles. Eg Eleanor Rigby, or She's leaving home which makes me go moist eyed.

I agree with Greyduster.
“You are my hearts delight” etc
My late husband used to sing it each morning to make sure his hearing aid was working.

"I prayed that she'd find you someday, but it's still hard to give her away".

from " I loved her first" by Heartland.
Check out the Father of the Bride 'signing' this song to his daughter and new Husband on their Wedding Day. It's on You tube and will have you in tears as it is so beautiful. ?

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.

Jeanie has lots of my favourites in her list. I'd also add:" I think you charmed me. I always hoped that someone would. Never had a love like this before. I never had it so good."
"Feel her body rise as you kiss her mouth among the fields of barley"
"Hold me closer, tiny dancer, See the headlights on the highway, Lay me down in sheets of linen".
There are loads of others, too numerous to mention, but I think Paul Williams, Sting and Bernie Taupin all know how to use words.

Gone through 3 hankies being reminded of some of my favourite songs.
Chasing cars
Dance with my Father
In the Living Years
First Time ever I saw your Face
I'll add some more...
It started with a kiss, in the back row of the classroom

Hey where did we go, days when the rain came

God on high, here my prayer

And may you never lay your head down, without a hand to hold

The Bubble Car song:

Beep beep, Beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

Now we're doing a hundred and twenty
As fast as I could go
The Bubble pulled alongside of me
As if we were going slow
The fellow rolled his window down
And yelled for me to hear

"Hey buddy how can I get this car out... of... second gear!"

DanniRae Sat 25-Aug-18 14:21:54

MissAdventure - grin

MissAdventure Sat 25-Aug-18 14:14:26

Ohhh, don't jump off of the roof, Dad,
You'll make a dent in the yard.
Mother just planted petunias,
The weeding and seeding was hard.
If you must end it all, Dad,
Won't you please give us a break?
Just take a walk to the park, Dad,
and there you can jump in the lake.

KatyK Sat 25-Aug-18 13:46:55

On a lighter note...

Keep your mind on your driving
Keep your hands on the wheel
And keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead.
We're having fun, sitting on the back seat
Kissing and a hugging with Fred.

Amazing what springs to mind!

annep Sat 25-Aug-18 13:35:29

me too KatyK.

Jalima ?

My favourite song atm. Big Big Train 2017, prog rock band

You were a flying ace
From the history books
Thrilling deeds and dashing looks
Fulfilling your destiny
Simply doing your duty
For King and Country

You were the poster boy
Who shunned your own fame
Who didn't take to the accolades
Even when propaganda
Screamed your name
You believed celebrity to be nonsense
You were a loner, a solitary man
Practical minded
And good with your hands
Your letters sent home
Revealed, this weapon had a conscience

Until at long last your plane emerges
From out of the low cloud
Inverted
Flying upside-down
Too close to the ground to recover
Heading earthbound
No engine sound
Black smoke trailing
Silently falling down
Brave Captain of the Skies

MissAdventure Sat 25-Aug-18 12:27:38

Me too!

blossom14 Sat 25-Aug-18 12:04:53

Hey there mister blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Everybody smiles at you

Mister Blue Sky always cheers me up.

Jalima1108 Sat 25-Aug-18 10:41:32

Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
and said Goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety trump
Trump, trump, trump

Well done Nellie - got rid of your chains and went back to Hindustan!

(I apologise for the last line, but I had to copy it faithfully!)
