I recently bought an album by the group 'Madness' and heard a song called " Shut Up "
It included one of the funniest lines that I have heard for a long time:

" I'm as honest as the day is long.
The longer the daylight , the less I do wrong".

So Gransnetters, the ball is now in your court. ??.

MissAdventure
There she stood, in the street.. smiling from her head to her feet.

Your post transported me back to the early 70s and one of my first live gigs in Glasgow. I was in lust with Paul Kossoff grin

smile
It instantly takes me back too, although I was probably about ten or so.
They're great lyrics!

You can't kill the spirit,

she's like a mountain

Old and strong;

she lives on and on.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose

if I shoukd live forever, and all my dreams come true
My memory of love will be of you.

MissAdventure Thu 23-Aug-18 23:33:23

The first time, ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars
Were the gifts you gave
To the dark, and the endless skies
My Love

Goodnight my angel, now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry, and if you sing this lullaby
Then in your heart there will always be a part of me
Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabies go on and on
They never die
That's how you and I will be

...like freedom where wild horses run... (Elton John).

... and if it hurts, don't let them know. Don't give yourself away.... (Joni Michell)

Two very contrasting ones

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high. ( Carousel)

I predict a riot ( Kaiser Chiefs)

callgirl, MissA, I watched Charlie Rich sing that on a programme called Kings Of Country on BBC4 just last week!

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes. As if to hide a lonely tear. My life will be forever autumn, 'Cos your not here.

So poignant

Allegretto you've picked one of my all time favourite songs - in fact one of my all time favourite artists too. So hard to choose just one of Billy Joel's songs.

Paddyann I went with my DD to see Paolo Nutini in concert about 10 years ago - he was superb, so good live. And I agree with you, it's difficult to choose just one of his songs too.

Bathsheba Fri 24-Aug-18 08:13:35

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

The full lyrics of He Ain't Heavy are pretty amazing, but these words have always stood out for me.

Duvetdiva Fri 24-Aug-18 09:32:46

Smile though your heart is breaking...

I sing this to myself when someone doesn’t return my smile. ?

Life is what happens while your busy doing other things .john lennon

Always you will be part of me
And I will forever feel your strength
When I need it most
You're gone now
gone but not forgotten
I can't say this to your face
But I know you hear
I'll see you again
You never really left
I feel you walk beside me
I know I'll see you again
When I'm lost
and I'm missing you like crazy
I tell myself I'm so blessed
To have had you in my life, my life.
I'll see you again
You never really left

For obvious reasons
Dire Straits - 'it's just that the time was wrong...Juliet'

And 10CC. 'I'm not in love, so don't forget it'

Well they while away their hours
In their ivory towers,
Never saying what they mean,
Never meaning what they say.

I love The Ballad of Lucy Jordan from Marianne Faithfull.

"At the age of 37, she realised she'd never
ride through Paris in a sports car with the warm wind in her hair".

It ends happily for Lucy though !

"At the age of 37 she knew she's found forever,
as she rode along through Paris with the warm wind in her hair"

And yes, I finally got my open top car by telling DH we needed to get one, whilst we still had hair for the wind to blow through !!

kittylester Fri 24-Aug-18 09:55:55

I love the Marianas Faithful version if that song but I first heard is live at a Doctor Hook concert and I found it really compelling!

sue01 Fri 24-Aug-18 10:01:23

Oh yes kittylester, I heard their version too. The lead singer.. Dennis Loccoriere ( the spelling is probably way out ! ) has a very emotional voice. Sylvia's Mother for example if full of angst !

kittylester Fri 24-Aug-18 10:01:27

I think all rhe replies on here are from women (and I do know that gn is mostly women!) but I wonder if listening to lyrics is more a woman thing anyway.

Dh likes modern jazz, where there are not a lot of lyrics, which I don't enjoy very much.

I love lyrics!! So I enjoy people like Ed Sheeran who tell a story I can relate to. I think that's why I like country!

But lots of the songs I like are written by men.

vickya Fri 24-Aug-18 10:01:53

Nana, I had Bobby McGee as the don't push song to sing while delivering daughters #1 and =#2 smile. I have collected 11 different versions of it at the time. I've seen Kris Kristofersen sing it live too, twice, and seen him with the Highwaymen too. But I don't think they sang it then. It was a while ago.

One of my favourites is
www.youtube.com/watch?v=emhwwCTZr4k

and
I've got a couple more years on you, baby, that's all.
I've had more chances to fly and more places to fall.
And it ain't that I'm wiser - it's only that I've spent
more time with my back to the wall.
And I've picked up a couple more years on you, baby, that's all.
I've walked a couple more roads than you, baby ,that's all.
And I'm tired of runnin' while you're only learning to crawl.
And you're headin somewhere , but I've been to somewhere
and found it was nowhere at all.
And I've picked up a couple of years on you baby , that's all.
Now sayin' goodbye, girl don't never come easy at all.
But you've got to fly 'cuz you're hearin' those young eagles call.
And someday when you're older, you'll smile at a man strong and tall.
And you'll say I've got a couple more years on ya baby that's all.

Why do we give up our hearts to the past?
And why must we grow up so fast?
