People who speak one day and not the next!

I am terribly unobservant, it's a failing I've always had. I was accused by a boss at work of deliberately ignoring him when we were both waiting at the lights!! I was amazed, I had been admiring the big daisies on the verge, much more interesting than cars for me. I'm sure he didn't believe me.

I would be rubbish in an identity parade.

Some examples you give are obviously more than that. I've been blanked myself after saying a cheery good morning - makes me feel a bit stupid. Try not to take it to heart, there are a lot of rude people out there.

Guilty! Like MOnica I am known to walk past people I know really well and not see them because I’m lost in deep thought and miles away. Also I have to watch where I walk as I’m inclined to lose my balance so tend to have my eyes on the ground in front of me.

I have a habit of waving at people I see coming towards me, or in cars driving by - and then realising they are not who I thought they were! I am always doing it!

I have no time for people who blow hot and cold. I like to know where I stand with people.

I am naturally friendly but have realised some people really do like to keep their distance and of course you have to respect that. I do get confused though when one day people will smile and wave and the next turn away without acknowledgement. (It's not just me. I am not the pest everyone avoids by the way! grin ) I have a very thin skin so I find moody people who speak one day and then don't speak the next a bit of a puzzle.

I had a very good friend at Uni who was a complete hoot and marvellous and witty company. We wrote to each other lots during the holidays and had a bond, which still exists to this day. However, she'd have times when she just didn't want to know anyone and was curt and fairly surly with everyone and would lock herself away in her room. The shutters just came down.

All of us on the same floor would comment on it. We learnt to give her a wide berth when the black mood came upon her. When she came out, often after 48 hours or so, she was back to her usual friendly self.

So, she taught me that some people cannot do the everyday cheery thing. I can but I know I wear a mask and will smile through the most difficult of times if I can so as not to bother people with my troubles. That in itself is a strange thing to do. People have different moods on different days and different coping mechanisms. I now know not to take it personally. (But I do like to know where I stand with people. )

I had this in my last job.

Girl in the office, sitting opposite me, mostly totally ignored me. Then sometimes chatted as if we were great mates!

Could never work that one out. I was there for 7 years and it was always like that with her.

I confess that I have been accused of this, but it is not deliberate, I just get lost in thought when walking on my own and just do not see people. I have walked past DH and not seen him.

The other thing is that I need glasses to see clearly in the distance and I do not always confidently recognise people until they are within about 20 feet. I am always worried about addressing someone I do not know because I thought they were some one else entirely.

Our neighbour over the road can totally ignore me or be really fine.

Also, a 'friend' who is a gp speaks unless there is someone more interesting about and, of course, there usually is!!

Lynne59 Mon 20-Aug-18 19:34:46

Yes, there are one or two on my road. I can't be bothered with them now, so I say "Hello" and nothing else.

We have a neighbour like that oldbatty I may as well be invisible.

MissAdventure Mon 20-Aug-18 19:25:52

Hmmm, well I've done that before, myself, but then the person surprised me by suddenly saying
"Well, hellooo!" as if they hadn't seen me for years and were delighted.

Chewbacca Mon 20-Aug-18 19:22:09

I can't be doing with people who blow hot and cold. I usually get to the stage where I just ignore them, rather than dither as to whether they will or won't speak.

MissAdventure Mon 20-Aug-18 18:47:53

None so queer as folk, I suppose.
It makes me feel like doing the same to them, though.
Just wait until they have something to say.
It won't be me listening!

Cherrytree59 Mon 20-Aug-18 18:43:13

No its not just you MissAdventure

MissAdventure Mon 20-Aug-18 18:30:51

I suppose its just that, really.
Some people only speak when they feel like it.
My upstairs neighbours have been living there for over a year, and we've barely said hello.
We had a lovely chat for the first time the other day, and I was pleased, because it felt a little uncomfortable before.
Today he strode past without a word.

Maybe some people just don't notice others in that moment? Perhaps preoccupied, feeling miserable or just not observant? Alternatively just rude hmm

Billybob4491 Mon 20-Aug-18 18:24:21

Our neighbours are the same, they keep their eyes fastened on the ground rather than lift their head and say good morning, but they always knock at the door if they need a favour.

MissAdventure Mon 20-Aug-18 18:22:46

I'm glad its not just me.
A woman who has lived round here for years kept me talking for ages a few weeks ago.
I heard her life story up to the present time.
I saw her this morning and she totally ignored me!

oldbatty Mon 20-Aug-18 18:08:26

Yes, our immediate neighbours do this. Its so rude. I dont want to be their best friends, just say hello.

One of them talks to my husband but not to me.

MawBroon Mon 20-Aug-18 18:06:17

The toad? ?
ROAD!

MawBroon Mon 20-Aug-18 18:05:31

Not really, if I am out with Hattie she greets them like a long lost friend and they have no option.
People in our village are very friendly though so progress up the toad can be slow!

silverlining48 Mon 20-Aug-18 18:01:40

Our immediate neighbour is a little like this, he either ignores us completely or doesn’t stop talking...it’s very strange. We can’t help but be wary. Just stick with the nice ones who don’t pass you by missA the rest aren’t worth worrying about.

janeainsworth Mon 20-Aug-18 17:40:13

Perhaps they haven’t actually seen you?
I can’t say it happens to me because if I see someone I know when I’m out, I go up to them and say hello.

KatyK Mon 20-Aug-18 17:39:34

Oh yes. I know a lot of those.

MissAdventure Mon 20-Aug-18 17:14:03

Lately I feel that a lot of people speak to me only sometimes.
Well, I don't just feel it; its happening!
Do you know people who, one day will stop for a little chat, and the next time not even make eye contact?
