In late 2017, I thought it would be nice to refurbish a (35 year old) Cabbage Patch doll that belonged to my D2. I sent it just before Christmas with the caveat that the doll was a collectors item and no longer a toy.
The doll was in very good condition, still in its original diaper albeit the dress had brown stains and fabric had become brittle with age. Doll also had no shoes, socks or signature plastic yellow dummy.
I spent a fortune on Ebay to replace Cabbage Patch shoes, Cabbage Patch doll dress w panties and the (very sought after by collectors) yellow dummy. I also added matching ribbons and white baby socks. I wrapped it very carefully and sent it by mail, over 1500 miles away.
On our last visit for GDs First Communion (May 2018), I recognized the Cabbage Patch dress on a stuffed dog belonging to gd. I later found the doll buried deep inside gd's toy bin. Doll was naked and hair was a tangled mess. Ribbons, shoes, socks and dummy are nowhere to be found.
On average these dolls are worth ~ $100 on Ebay and more if they are in mint condition. To say I was dismayed would be an understatement. To avoid further upset, I decided not to say anything to DD2....it was her doll after all.
