I'm not sure if this is health or general chat so posting it here.
My almost 5 year old grandson in NZ has been diagnosed as just being on the HFA (High Functioning Autism) scale. My son has suspected for some time he might be verging on it as he shows some very typical traits - is completely obsessed with particular subjects and becomes an expert on it showing knowledge beyond his years once he focuses on something. He becomes terribly distressed if something isn't 'just right' such as not being able to line up his Egyptian artefacts in the right order or having a temper tantrum off the scale when he was here in Dec as he couldn't have a particular cereal he'd suddenly decided on which we didn't have. They have changed doctors and he has now been tested hence the diagnosis.
He's been at a really good nursery since he was 2 where I know his mum and dad had spoken to the teachers about him - they said it was difficult to diagnose at an early age and would more likely be picked up when he starts school in Oct. I've noticed in the online daily diaries I receive from there that he's rarely with other children and we did find him difficult to relate to at times when he was here. He's a lovely little boy and can be very loving but then change quickly to being very difficult to cope with.
My son has sent a message overnight saying GS had a play date with a little girl from nursery yesterday and it clearly showed he was more special needs. They're not young parents - my son is nearly 44 and DIL 40 - they also have a little 3 year old who is just a normal happy chappy which is possibly why they have become more aware of the differences between them. He said he's very sad and worried for the future.
It's so difficult to know what to say to reassure them especially given the distance and time between us. Does anyone have any experience of autism and advise I could pass on to them? I know several 'celebrities' have mentioned having autism or aspergers but it's just been a word before - we know nothing of how families cope day to day living with a diagnosed child.
Petition to stop the EARLY RELEASE for PC Harpers killers

I hope your GS early diagnosis is to the family's advantage.
