The glaziers we got quotes from didn't shed much light - the consensus of opinion was that the heat must have found a weak spot from the initial installation, and it was a chance in a million. (We took over the conservatory with the house so don't know the history of it except it's about eight years old.) The strange thing is that it had shattered on the cooler, dining room side, of the double glazing. A mystery which will never be solved unfortunately.
