Moorland Fire

..haven't watched the news today re our moorland but helicopters constantly flying over our house a d lots of fire engines passing and water tanker's...please please rain... we have some stocks in Horwich and in Rivington village and that's where I would put the arsonist!!!!

Iam64 There was another letter in the I today making the point you make - that the two situations are completely different and setting fires would not work here because of the peat. (I didn't think you were being snippy by the way).

Greyduster, a friend who lives 4 miles from the fires reports a pair of birds of prey hovering over their home, something she's never seen before. Of course, we're all wondering about the wild life. The woodland Trust are saying 10 years before the habitat returns after the fires.
The fire crews and volunteers are making fire breaks Greyduster. As everyone acknowledges, the issue is peat which is used as a fuel because it works so well.

It seems to have got knocked off the top spot on the news so I thought I’d catch up with the situation. It tseems to be dying down although it still burning.
If I’m correct the army have been stood down.

Yes, the army have been stood down from the fire on Saddleworth Moor. The fire on Winter Hill has been contained but as with Saddleworth, fire fighters continue to work there. Fantastic work by the firefighters and volunteers.

The Thai rescue has overtaken the Saddleworth Moor fire. I had lost track of it as well.
The firefighters, volunteers and all involved have worked tirelessly over a long period of time to get this fire under control. I hope they have been successful, we need to recognise the bravery of people who do this as a matter of course without thought for themselves. So different from the self obsessed so called 'celebs' who dominate the news.

Well am praying that some of the rain showers forecasted will fall on our moorland..
