Thanks for that Lilyflower I did feel bad complaining but it helps that others agreed. I think it may have been fixed as the sound is very faint now. Either that or its been turned down. Hopefully it will last. And yes the outside noise is amazing. A bungalow behind us has a large pool and loud music bbq etc. Whole family camped over the weekend. Obviously loving every minute of this weather! lol. Who can blame them?

I am very lucky in that my house is not attached to anyone else’s but in this hot weather it seems that everyone is outside and making a commotion and doors and windows are open to hear it. From loud rock music, dogs barking and children screaming to power tools:- we have had it all this week. We are trying to take plenty of no notice but I think that a neighbour’s loud fan through a party wall would be intolerable.

Try a polite approach and if that fails complain to Environmental Health.

All quiet last night which was good but I still feel awful. White noise generator sounds good. Barmyoldbat I don't understand people not considering others.

I have neighbours who have a tv in their bedroom, they seem to go to bed about 11.30 and turn the tv on...loud enough for me to hear just as I had dropped off to sleep. They don't take kindly to be asked not to do something b y anyone. So I use to make a point of being awake early and turning the radio on in my bedroom. When their TV stopped being loud then I stopped the radio in the morning. Seems to have work.

Have you tried ear plugs? Or a white noise generator might work to block out the sound. You can download apps for white noise onto your phone or iPad/laptop.

I might need to get one myself, there's a couple of wood pigeons currently shouting loudly down my chimney!!

I have a white noise machine I bought from Amazon and its a godsend. Our neighbours have a gate which rattles in the wind and they prop it shut with the big wheelie bin. Trouble is they work weird shifts so the bin is being dragged around at all hours and its right opposite our side windows. Despite the double glazing the rolling bin and crashing gate would wake me up every time, but now I have the noise machine it masks all the other nocturnal racket.

my husband snores for England - have you tried earplugs?

I m not saying it will work Annep , just that it’s worth a try, your brain does learn how to block some sounds out When I lived overseas the noise from the tree beetles was horrendous at night and I thought I d never sleep again but I chose to accept it and lo and behold after a week or two I never even heard them any more because my brain had refocused away from that noise
Definitely worth a try I just leave the radio on go to sleep to soothing music or a talk show and if I wake in the night I can either put it off or leave it ( I think it only takes pennies to run)

I listen to the radio sometimes in bed Bluebelle and I'm not sure it would work to help me sleep. But I will try if I have to tonight. I'm a light sleeper. I think you are lucky sleeping through most noises. Not lucky with burglaries of course. Thats awful to be burgled not once but twice! I don't think I would ever sleep again after that and I would want to listen for every sound. Thanks for suggestion.

Why do you think I m lucky Angel do you mean because I can sleep with the radio on It started a few years back after I was burgled twice ( not so lucky) I used to lie awake listening for every little sound so resorted to the radio on low and it worked well why not try it ?

My step-daughter had a neighbour who kept his motor bike inside the house and revved it up regularly. Her house virtually shook every time and when my GD was small and slept a lot it continually work her up. SD was 'afraid' of causing bad feeling and put up with this only to become really stressed herself. Eventually her husband went to see the neighbour, asked him to go in their house, and he then revved up the motor bike so the neighbour could be on the receiving end of the noise and vibration. He stopped doing it immediately. Seems like a good way to sort out this kind of problem.

So I'm not the only one. I hate disagreements. I usually ignore things because we all have to be tolerant of each other at times but losing sleep is a big ask. You are so lucky Bluebelle. I wish I was like that. Lollee I think they must leave bedroom doors open. But I really dont see the point myself. It would be a huge job to increase soundproofing and not guaranteed to work against vibration. I will let her hear it if she wants. Will let you know what happens. ?

What good is it doing on the landing, does anyone sit there?

I have neighbours ten at last count plus a dog that run up and down the stairs at night or early morning and sound like they are in my house my answer is to have my radio on low so my brain only hears that and I usually sleep though most noises including thunderstorms that everyone comments on and I hear nothing of

You are right the screws do need tighting every so often. We had a ceiling fan in our bedroom (until last year)
It had been up 18 years.
Due to the fan motion the screw holes in the ceiling had become too big to hold the screws in place.

I sympathise with the problem you've got with your lack of sleep, as my neighbour is also noisy. He's in his 60s, widowed a few years ago (before he moved next door). He shouts and rants to himself, always late at night. He also bang very loudly on his kitchen table! Repeatedly! I've asked him if he's alright, as I thought he must be unwell/distressed or something.

He said that when he's had a couple of drinks, he gets maudlin about his life, and he shouts to release his anger/sorrow. That's all very well, but at 2am sometimes, I could strangle him. I've invited him round for dinner, a coffee, chat (I'm married)or just a bit of company, but he's never bothered.

This man continues to be so very inconsiderate (he knows my husband gets up at 6am for work, and so does my son). I've decided that tonight I'll ring him every few hours throughout the night, to wake him up. I've already told him (in a nice way) that we can hear him in the early hours. He doesn't care.

Can you put some sound-proofing on the party wall on your side?

My neighbours son & girlfriend's dog, who stayed with them very regularly, used to pounce and snarl at me every time I went in my garden. I asked the son very pleasantly if he could train the dog as my nerves were shredded and I couldn't go in my garden. He nodded and said it was doing the same thing in his own garden at home. His mother then slammed and crashed their door every time she saw me outraged that I should criticise her son, often shouting everyone knows that dogs bark. People generally don't take criticism well at all, so I can see how it's worrying.

It is very difficult to say something when you get on well isn't it? I hope she sorts it. I am surprised she could sleep.

My next door neighbour, who is lovely, often leaves her side entrance door with the latch not in place so that when it is windy it bangs all day and night. I have been known to creep out in my dressing gown and close it, but it makes quite a noise when I do so. When the latch was broken at one time, I used to reach round and put a brick behind the door. I eventually I ran out of bricks and saw them piled in her garden but didn't have the nerve to say anything. I don't know why the banging didn't annoy her too.

So that she dosnt think that you are “old and moany” you could ask her to switch it on and come next door to listen. Hope it gets resolved for you ...

Our upstairs neighbour's stairs are over our bedroom,her friend leaves every night at 11.58 precisely,and has lead boots on ....but nice people so say nowt and grin and bear it at least it's not all night

As you asked so nicely she probably won’t have been put out. It would be silly to go to bed feeling anxious about the noise and not getting any sleep. She won’t have realised the fan could be heard through the dividing wall. Yes wooden stairs are a pain too but hopefully they won’t be clattering up and down at night. If I had wooden stairs I wouldn’t be wearing shoes on them. I hope you have a more peaceful night tonight - maybe they will turn the fan off at bedtime.
Don’t worry about them being “young”; I find that most people are young these days!
