Thoroughly enjoyed watching the opening match last night with my 8 year old footy mad grandson .
And what a match it was too, 5-0 to the hosts Russia . The Saudis might not have been on the pitch at all .

Teresa May has stepped in to say that the Royal Mail workers and others should be allowed to fly the English flag during the tournament, after the misery guts at RM banned it’s workers from doing so. Quite right too .

You’re spot on about Southgate Iam he knew exactly what he was doing when he picked his squad . Thank goodness they are staying cool headed .

Great result but let us not get too excited they were the world's best team as opposition were they.

Let us see if we can do that against Spain or Portugal.grin

Brilliant result, well played England. I'm a huge Crystal Palace supporter and remember watching Gareth playing for the Eagles. Great England manager and great young, dedicated team. Looking forward to the Belgium game.

Ah yes Belgium a “whole different ball ⚽️ game” . Looking forward to it though . Will def have to take one of DHs blood pressure pills for that one !

Mindfulness gillybob - I've read that Mr Gareth Southgate has introduced this to the team. If true, it's obviously working. I know the opposition today wasn't of a high standard but, their filthy fouls could have rattled our team and it didn't. I wonder if they're doing yoga as well ooooommmmm.

Perhaps he gave them this to read:

Day6 Mon 25-Jun-18 00:14:11

I found the game between Poland and Colombia this evening much more exciting than the England one, in terms of skill, flair and fast moving football. England were described by the commentator in their first game as being "pedestrian" and they were. This afternoon Panama provided very little opposition and I would have imagined the Premiership footballers who make up our team would have an easy ride against them. They did. The real test will be against Belgium on Thursday. We'll see what they're made of then. OH is a footy fan, so we're likely to watch most of the televised games. Trouble is, in this warm weather we have lots of cold beer in the fridge and beer and football make good companions!

Well done the Poms! I was seething through the first half. If I'd been ref. I would have been dishing out red cards en masse! with half the Panamanians taking early showers. grin
Wonder how many yellow cards are in the ref's back pocket? Guess if he ran out of yellows he could turn to red! The "Panams" must have thought they were at the Gaelic football World Cup; they'd be naturals at that, not to mention Aussie Rules footy.
Disappointed the Poms didn't get 10, but I guess they are saving themselves. Good luck to them!

Couldn’t agree more with your post Rufus2 . Shocking behaviour from Panama and why no red cards?

I wouldn’t be in the slightest bit surprised if the England squad were practising yoga too Iam . This World Cup is showing our boys up in the best of lights ! Let’s hope they can let it up . smile

Meant to add that I am worried that one of the teams with little to lose will be out to get Harry Kane in order to put him out of the tournament all together .

Day6, I missed the Poland v Columbia match but your post reminded me of Mourinho's words of wisdom before his glorious team were defeated. The commentator asked if he'd prefer a 6 - 0 win in ManU's favour. Mourinho said no he thought a 6 - 0 win would be boring to watch. He is a classic ManU manager (yes, I'm a fan)
All that said, give the boys a chance Day6. No one is in the place of believing we're about to get through, much less win the World Cup. Let's not let cynicism and the usual anti engerland feelings get in the way of a bit of fun

We had delicious Panamanian food on Sunday at a friend's while we watched the match. I especially enjoyed empanadas with avocado and tomato, also creamed corn and a cake soaked in three milks (condensed, evaporated and normal) and topped with a large amount of whipped cream. On Thursday we move on round the village and have been promised chips with mayonnaise, waffles and lots of Belgian chocolate. I shall be wearing my England shirt (a very old red one I found in a charity shop) and taking flags and a vuvuzela.

Funny game football - I do not watch it, but OH has it on, and subliminally in my one ear, all I hear is people arguing about "fouls"! I glance up occasionally and someone is writhing on the grass!grin

HootyMcOwlface Tue 26-Jun-18 12:44:20

I think I’m getting a crush on Gareth. Had bit of a grudge against him for kicking that penalty over the bar yonks ago, but I’m changing my opinion of him. I reckon he’s told the team to sing the anthem - I hate seeing them standing there stum, chewing gum like a herd of cows - so impressed with that, and the team seem all well mannered lads, not a big ‘I am’ in sight! He also looks great in his shirt, tie and waistcoat! Go Gareth! X

DanniRae Tue 26-Jun-18 14:35:24

Well there's something about Harry, Hooty!! grin

petra Wed 27-Jun-18 17:17:08

Germany knocked out, good. They just thought they had to turn up and the game was theirs. Wrong grin

kittylester Wed 27-Jun-18 17:27:09

I've definitely got a crush on Gareth!! He seems such a nice bloke.

And, isn't this world cup brilliant for throwing things up in the air? I just wish they would sort the refereeing out!

gillybob Wed 27-Jun-18 21:17:14

Completely agreed petra grin

Looking forward to tomorrow’s game even more now ! Come on England ???????

Rufus2 Thu 28-Jun-18 07:37:10

What!? No commiserations for the Socceroos?
Peru 2 v Aussies 0 sad
Oh dear; we'll have to wait another 4 years; hope I'm still around by then! smile
Meanwhile I'll have to don my St. George's hat and barrack for the Poms again. Hope I don't have to doff it, other than for their impending victories! grin
Go Poms!
Good Health and enjoy the telecast.

DanniRae Thu 28-Jun-18 09:17:17

Completely agree kitty - the referees definitely need to grow some b*lls - see what I did there??
Looking forward to tonight's game COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!

farview Thu 28-Jun-18 12:26:28

felice Thu 28-Jun-18 12:37:55

Going to a Summer drinks party tonight in the city centre, and will stay on with others to watch the football, wearing a horned black yellow and red hat of my adopted country. I have gone out to watch the Rugby but never football. Like everything here it will be very multinational so should be a good athmosphere.

lemongrove Thu 28-Jun-18 14:24:28

DH and DGS will be glued to tv this evening, I may even watch a bit myself.... ???????⚽️

gillybob Thu 28-Jun-18 14:29:05

I have just heard that Apparently Belgium are playing to lose as this will mean a much easier draw in the next round . I know that both they and England have already qualified but is it just me who thinks playing to lose ( to gain the easier draw ) is effectively cheating ?

I’m am really looking forward to the game and I sincerely hope England haven’t adapted the same way of thinking .

gillybob Thu 28-Jun-18 15:40:02

Adopted not adapted blush
