Black box in young drivers cars

The insurance company my daughter is going through gives ( I think she said three) warnings before putting the price up
They seemed very fair when she talked it all through with them
We just want him to have some restrictions in the first year although he’s pretty sensible, when they get with friends even the most sensible might tend to show off

I think they can be useful to reduce insurance costs.

However there can be problems sometimes - BBC Watchdog ran a segment about technical glitches that led to people's insurance being cancelled

I find I disagree with you about most things Quizqueen so no surprise here why do you consider a black box is a spy it’s a ‘parent’ saying slow down don’t rev your car up don’t do wheelies in the car park drive safely and you ll be rewarded it’s not spying on your activities to report to MI5

Nannan2 anyone can have one my friend friend has had one for years it reduces her insurance and if she wants to go out at night they go in second car

My ds had a black box for years. He spent the first year moaning about kerfew. He was very pleased when he got big reduction in second year due to good driving. Now in third year he can't have it ad now working shifts. Useful for new driver especially if confident as makes them think twice before putting their foot down.

My granddaughter had one fitted when she passed her test 3 years ago - it was also a condition of her insurance and reduced the premiums so a very good idea. Her sister will be 17 in Nov and will no doubt have the same. I also think it's a great idea that learner drivers are instructed on motorways now - we've seen several this weekend. It was the first thing my husband did when our sons passed their tests to take them on the motorway - it's so different to driving in towns and countryside.

Most of our local roads have a speed limit of 20mph which is a ridiculous limit but a black box would show any driver speeding at a more sensible 30mph. Consequently most young drivers here choose not to have a black box.

I would rather that when my DGC learn to drive they have a black box watching over them for at least a year. There have been far too many young people killed in road accidents, usually related to speed, around here. There is no divine right to drive, and anything which makes it safer for young drivers (and the rest of the traffic on the same road) is, IMO, nothing but good news.

However, I do agree with you, quizqueen about smart phones, alexa and also smart TVs. The information they seem to be able to gather does nothing towards keeping anyone safe, just lets them target advertising at you!

I think anything which reeks of big brother watching you- black boxes, smart phones, alexa etc. are very bad ideas.

My grandson had one fitted when he first passed for cheaper insurance. It gave us all peace of mind knowing he couldn’t go over the speed limit. It has now been removed and my daughter is a little worried now he has nothing to keep him in check.

What can you do they have to learn to fly on their own sometime.

I agree with those who say that all cars should be fitted with one. If insurance companies think they improve safety on the road then it should do so for us all.

Yes theyre such a good idea youd think theyd let everone choose to have them! It gets driver in mindset of being able to gauge their own speed really- whats a sensible speedetc- and more careful& aware of how to drive sensibly.

No its not compulsory but if you choose not to have it the premiums go sky high.my son wouldnt have been able to drive a car right now if not for black box as insurance would have been too much.even my middle son(29 soon) couldnt afford to drive for 2 years after he passed his test at 22!my younger son still had to pay £1600 even with black box.

Yes my son passed last november(just 19) and tesco insurance was cheapest but they do insist you have a black box .they arrange with the driver when to come fit it- ussually within2 wks- and it takes about 30mins to do.yes it records the speeds and i find it gives me peace of mind as a mum to know he wont be tempted to go 'haring off 'to impress his college friends-(hes quite a sensible lad tbf)but also it gives him chance to maybe get a good reduction on next yrs insurance.youve to decide how many miles you might be doing a year though &'buy' extra if you go over that- which isnt discussed in enough detail i dont think- but the least is about 5 or 6 thousand i think so dont worry too much.i think theyre a great idea for young drivers- kinda makes them have a 'second concience'.also my sons satnav is good as the 'car lady' as i jokingly call her is like having mum in the car to nag him even when im not there!lol -as the satnav bleeps/tings when he goes even slightly over limit.(which is only on motorway overtaking usually) the black box people do ring if theres any problems.so it helps to mention if you'l be motorway driving a lot which my son does to go college/visit family/holiday etc.and no it doesnt diffrenciate whos driving- so its attached to car but if its only the young person registered for the car then naturally they assume its the driver/keeper of the vehicle doing the driving.you can add a SECOND driver to policy to help take down price- but must not put them as owner/first driver as thats against the law of course.(maybe a parent/relative who could then be able to also drive or borrow the car officially if/ when they needed to?)

As I understand it the Black boxes can't differentiate between drivers.

They should be fitted to all cars permanently along with fitted dash cams.

My daughter has one. She passed her test last year and having a box meant a reduction in insurance. She has discovered however that it penalises you if you have a lot of stop/start journeys, which can’t be helped if you have to drive through heavy traffic in town even if you are a careful driver. She goes for a longer run when she can at quieter periods to get her average score up!

Some of the drivers I've seen on the roads, I think everybody needs a Black Box!

No it's whoever is driving the car at the time, my brother took his son's car to the garage for an MOT and had to be very careful how e drove as well !!.

Being aware of the volume of young motorists that appear in Court on a daily basis, I personally think it’s a great idea.

My nephew aged 18 passed his test a few weeks ago and is going to buy his first car this weekend. My sister says he is having a black box as a condition of being allowed to have his own car.

Does this box differentiate between who is driving , the named driver or the driver added on the insurance

I accept I am being stupid but I know nothing of these boxes and am trying to understand

My grandson also does shift work whilst at college so sometimes have a 11 finish and a 5 start but will have to cycle those days as the difference in the price of the insurance is nearly £2000 being over £3000 without and just over £1000 with plus the influence of feeling he has to drive safely to keep the price down
