I was 64 on my last birthday. Somehow it seems much bigger than 63. It also coincided with various aches and pains and general niggly grumbles. It got me thinking. What is 64 supposed to feel like? What is it supposed to look like? Does it spring out of bed in the morning ready to face the day or grimace as it rearranges its aching body into an upright position? Does it open the wardrobe and put together a stylish chic outfit that will suit the numerous exciting adventures planned for the day or drag on the same old “gardening” clothes? Does it look in the mirror and like what it sees or quickly drag a comb through its hair in a darkened room? And how does 64 spend its day?
It seems that each generation of 64 year olds has new decisions to make about aging. We are living longer and generally healthier, but does mean we are as fit and limber as our 30 year old selves. We are often still working, looking after grandchildren, caring for parents, sometimes paying a mortgage. My own grandparents at 64 looked ancient. Two died very young but the remaining two looked and dressed and behaved, to me, like “old people.
Back to today, some 60plus people I know are, in spite of their varied physical issues, engaging, active, stylish and involved. Others seem to have thrown in the towel, welcoming what they see as old age. Is old age a choice now? Can we decide be defeated by age or embrace it?
In spite of what the mirror tells me, I’m not ready to throw in the towel yet. There are things I still want to do, places I still want to see, experiences I still want to have. But that little voice in my head says-but you are 64 petunia, shouldn’t you act your age? But what is 64?
So what is 64 to you?

what is 64
(86 Posts)No different to 63, I should imagine, but with the advantage of being one year nearer my pension and free bus pass. Go WASPI!
good one maggie. hadnt thought of that!
You are right Maggiemaybe each stage of our life has its down side but also definitely positives. I am well past the 64 stage but now I can do things to please myself without criticism. Wear what I want, be more honest and not watch what I say ( to an extent ) do what I want and generally be me.
I was 65 in February and behaving much the same as I did at 55 and I expect to be the same at 75 but perhaps not 85 if I get there.
I'm 69 which, somehow, seems much older than 68 although nothing has changed apart from the number. I'm hoping 70 will seem much younger than 69.
I'm 67 on Sunday... and have good news for you ... 64 is a blast !
Just ask yourself... if not now, when ??
Then get out there and get amongst it
I am 73. It is incredible to me! I am still working, started a small publishing business with my husband three years ago, have a big house, three cats resident, three grown-up daughters non-resident and four and a half grandchildren, ditto. So no different from 63 really except for the publishing business (which is not my main work). and the grandchildren, all still under 5. Don't let a mere number get you down or lower your expectations.
Well I’m about to find our what 64 feels like as it’s my birthday this weekend! I agree it does sound significantly older than 63, silly really. I find myself attacking life on all levels, doing this I’ve always wanted to do like there’s no tomorrow. I’m loving a new found confidence in who I am. For example Ive taken the decision to spend a week in France on a language immersion course in August, staying with a French family. I love languages & this is an exciting venture on my own, fully supported by DH! If you have good health at this age I feel that is everything & I for one intend to live life to the max at 64! Have fun too!
I am 67. At 65 I decided to change my life...a new adventure beckoned. I opted out of pension scheme at work and took lump sum and with my savings decided to buy a narrow boat to live on. I have also changed my style of dress and dye my hair metallic silver. Ok...Not everyone can be so drastic in their lives. I do think it is important to move on with life rather than stagnate when one gets to a certain age. There are still adventures to be had. I have lived on my boat for a year now and love it.... I even have man in my life after being alone for goodness knows how many years
Hi Petunia I’m 64 next weekend always have my birthday on or near Fathers day so his cards get lost in mine LOL I was watching a video doing the rounds on FB yesterday about never being too old to dance and they said the gent was late 70s and the lady 64 She looked ancient! and yes I too am a Waspi another 21 months till my pension and bus pass too To me it doesn’t seem 5 minutes since I was 60 but folk don’t think I look 64 so that’s a bonus I’ve a photo of my Grandma standing by my pram 63 years ago when she was 45 she looks in her 70s-80s then she died when she was 49 so I barely remember her Im all creaky and grindy though after a 40 year nursing career
Since being 64 I’ve changed a lot. Now 68 I’ve had my eyebrows tattooed as they were so sparse. I was given a new look by a national newspaper which made me more youthful looking and have done more modelling for them. I had my teeth professionally whitened. I’ve been a couch potato all my life and hated exercise, but now I do kickboxing three times a week and take part in four hour hit squad sessions of mixed martial arts. Tomorrow, hopefully, I will have outlived my DM who dropped dead unexpectedly. Perhaps this has driven me on to enjoy my sixties. Embrace being 64. It’s a new beginning, not the beginning of the end.
Numbers are just numbers. I am 76, pretty fit, travel a lot, just written a book, ready to be sold. Grown up Grandchildren dont need to be looked after anymore.I can do what I want when I want, couldnt be better. At 64 you are YOUNG, enjoy the years ahead!
Don't dwell on something you can't change. My dear old mum used to say...if you think old, you will act old and you will get old. So true.
I too am 64, have a bit of arthritis and aching in the mornings sometimes. But you can only be as good as you let yourself be. 64 is young nowadays. I have lost quite a few friends who died young, mostly from cancer. Just enjoy your life, try and ignore those aches and pains. Young people can have arthritis, aches and pains, its not just an age thing so try not to focus on the not so good things, and focus on the good things in your life xx
I always think of the Beatles song, 'When I'm 64, getting older, losing my hair' etc.
It's just a number though, isn't it? I'll be 64 in January so I just hope that I'll still be here with good health, etc.
I was 64 in January I don't feel any different to this time last year. I haven't "sprung out of bed" for years sadly.
I have got to the stage when doing my make up of thinking "that'll do, who's going to look at you anyway" but I do still make the effort.
My head tells me I'm 34 but unfortunately my body dosen't agree.
wow-great responses. i love it that all you lovely 60+ women are out there-doing things. i dont feel bad being 64 but as i said, it just seems so much older than 63.
as a matter of interest, do you think that technology is helping us all stay younger for longer? by that i mean information at your finger tips, forums to chat and discuss, images of glam older women such as helen mirren. i feel that technology can open the mind to possibilities older generations had no idea about. we just need to run with it
It’s funny how some birthdays pass almost without notice, yet others have us pondering all sorts of things. This year I am still trying to come to terms with the fact that I feel life is slipping by and I’m not getting the best out of it. I am trying to address that, but it didn’t bother me at all on my previous birthday.
I’ll be 64 in July and I don’t suppose it will be much different from 63. Just keep doing what you want and can.
Some people are ‘old’ at much younger age and some young when much older in years.
Go and see " book club" went last night it'll make you feel 18 again! Never mind 64!
Can't remember!
Totally agree with the idea of think young and you’ll act young.
A lot has to do with genetics and general family attitudes. I’m 66 and have a lot of friends in the 40 to 50 age range, as well as my age and beyond. Their views and opinions are diverse, which helps me keep a young outlook on life.
Genetically, my Great Grandmothers lived into their 90s, my Grandmothers only into their 80s, but they smoked!
My mother into her 80s and she also smoked. So I’m hoping to last! Of course there’s always the proverbial ‘hit by a bus’!
