Something I would like to try

I've been caught out by classes before though, Anne, ones that claim to be for beginners and turn out to be full of semi-professionals. Yes, I'm looking at you, local ballroom dancing class where everybody else was obviously well acquainted with the cha-cha-cha on day one and so enjoyed watching us struggle to master it. I'm going to try those online tutorials, in the privacy of my own front room.

Plenty of tutorials on youtube. But why not join a class? I have not a creative cell in my body but I love trying and have produced some nice little paintings. More importantly I have made friends and enjoy the class so much. Yesterday we spent as much time chatting as painting. You will find people at all levels . Dont have to be an expert at drawing/painting. U3A usually have classes.

For those who want to learn to ride, I’d say go for it. I did it about 20- odd years ago, and have just started again, mainly because DH has always wanted to and booked himself a lesson. He is 68.

I've enjoyed watching the various art series on television eg Portrait Artist of the Year, Watercolour Artist of the Year etc. I painted my teddy bear many years ago using oils. It's the only painting I've done that's recognisable possibly because I put my heart and soul into it. DH, bless him, framed it

Oh how I wish I had some artistic talent ?. Some years ago when the programme 'Coast' was on, one of the presenters, may have been Alice ? used to do some very pretty watercolours, and I envied her talent.

Good grief gilly! You wouldn't get many of those in a pound!! We had a life model in one of our art group classes some time ago. We all enjoyed drawing him (I’ll try and find my effort). Strangely, the only thing I had a particular difficulty with was his glasses!!

I think I got some (but not all) of his proportions a bit out NanKate . It really was the best laugh I’ve had in ages though. We all shifted seats so as not to be in the eye line of “it” and then he put his foot up on a raised box.

I have been to the free National Gallery free drawing session which I found very interesting (though a little difficult to hear the short talk at the beginning). Materials are provided too and some feedback.

I think everyone can draw. Some have a more instinctive feel for it but I still think that, with lots of enthusiasm and practice, anyone can make big improvements. Just give it a go, what have you got to lose!

I agree - go for it! Don’t say you have no artistic ability, and don’t say you can’t draw. Just experiment with different grades of pencils, charcoal, pens, starting with simple shapes, looking at light and shade. Copy things until your confidence increases. Don’t be overawed by it. No one else has to be impressed with it except you.
With regard to the OP last sentence, two years ago, I started tying fishing flies (at a time when my eye sight and manual dexterity was going down the drain!). Books make it look relatively simple. It isn’t. Mine are awful Frankenstein efforts that do not look anything like the things of beauty that others produce. But you know what? The fish don’t seem to know the difference! The scruffier they are, the better they seem to like them (thank God!).

nankate I dont know ehere you live but the National Gallery in London have drawing sessions for free on Frdays. Perhaps there is a gallery near you that does similar?

It’s amazing how many people can and do learn to draw, paint, play a musical instrument, write books, write poems etc.Most have some talent, will never be lauded, famous etc but get pleasure from what they do, so it’s never too late to take something up ( and who knows, you may just be one of those who have a rare talent.....and make millions!)

Go for it! As someone who can't even draw a stick man I am in awe of anyone who has the nerve to have a go.

My WI did a nude drawing class last year and whilst I didn’t do the (male) model a great deal of “ justice” I think I did quite well for a first timer .
