Coffee to go

Perhaps someone will be able to answer a simple question.
A young woman who lives close to me walks her six year old son to school every day, GREAT, most parents take their child by car this is to be admired, however every morning on her way home she buys a take away coffee from a kiosk in the car park adjacent to the school and carries it home and presumably drinks it there (the coffee cups are no recycleable). Why pay for a cup of coffee every morning, carry it home when one is just 7 minutes away from home, where she could make one herself? To me it seems a waste of money and not good for the environment. Please enlighten me.

Me neither lemongrove
I bought an old Gaggia coffee machine on eBay and that delivers exactly what the hoardes cramming Costa, pay upwards of £40 a month for.

I'm sure she isn't the only one using the kiosk on a daily basis.

Agree Harrigran or she may have recently given up cigarettes and the caffeine is helping.

It could be her reward for walking her child to school rather than the easy option of using the car.

Quite agree newnanny. I try very hard to not judge other people I know we all have a tendency to do it in a minor or major way but to me it’s an unattractive trait. I may not like a top someone else is wearing for example but it wouldn’t be kind to whisper and it reminds me of the unpleasant school ground behaviour from my youth.
I don’t agree that commenting on a strangers use of their own money is kindly put, why comment at all?
As I said a genuine question as to what pleasure someone may get from take away coffee purchases I could understand, but the comment about it being a waste of money not so.
I don’t spend a fortune on garden plants as gardening doesn’t interest me! But I realise it brings many others pleasure, some people get into collecting figurines or action figures, again not my bag but absolutely their choice.

My dh absolutely loves his coffee. I prefer tea. A couple of years ago I treated him to a bean to cup machine that makes cafe quality latte and capochino as well as espresso it cost £600 and he buys Costa coffee to go into it but he loves it and has 2 or 3 cups daily. Even though he has this machine at home he also buys 2 cups each week at swimming pool. We all like our little luxuries but we all like different things. Your neighbour likes her coffee other people buy lots of plants for their garden, very pretty and expensive but also not an essential. I suppose we all have disposable income and spend it how it pleases us most. You do sound a bit judgmental of your neighbour.

This topic has certainly touched some raw nerves!
I am surprised by the walkaboutcarryingacup culture which seems pervasive.
I'm with the GNetter who suggested we don't need to rehydrate constantly and i think it's not a good example to set our kids.
I believe it's a spin-off from the gyms where everyone must have a drink nearby in case they faint .

Well put lollee.

lollee Sat 02-Jun-18 19:38:11

Because people are being unkind, and in some instances downright nasty about or to someone who has said or done nothing wrong. Maybe I am a sensitive little soul but I don't like my head bitten off for an opinion kindly put, nor do i like it done to others.

Spangles1963 Sat 02-Jun-18 19:33:42

Why does it bother you?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I am now scared to add anything to a thread having been metaphorically torn apart when what I have said I felt to be harmless and not at all offensive.
I came hoping to have a chinwag with likeminded older ladies and mistakenly called them sweeties, oh boy boy did I get a dressing down.... Called patronising. I mentioned the colour of a person and was called racist.
For the record I have often mentally wondered why people would choose to waste money on fripperies, but my thought process has then continued on to 'oh well, up to them, their money'. So does that unbidden thought make me judgemental. I also cringe when I hear the f word, inwardly tut when i see someone swigging beer from a can at 10am or blowing smoke near a child. I also nudge my friend and whisper that I don't like an item of clothing on a passer by, so does she. I could go on. But i know i am not a wicked person and should not be made to feel so for whispered asides, unsolicited thoughts or things i personally don't like. Op said nothing nasty or unkind but commented on someone who acts in a different way, we all do it. I would sooner be a little bit judgemental about someone who will never be aware than make a cruel or unkind remark to a fellow gn and spoil their day.

“Why pay for a cup of coffee every morning, carry it home when one is just 7 minutes away from home, where she could make one herself? To me it seems a waste of money”

Was the part of her “chat” that I had an issue with, had she said I don’t see the appeal of take away coffees and would love to know why other people might consider them a worth while purchase or what pleasure they get from them it might have been a chat thread! As it is it was, in stead what is this young woman wasting her money on this for?

Farmor15 Sat 02-Jun-18 18:39:27

As annep said, this thread is just chat- the OP asked for suggestions why this mother might want to buy a takeaway coffee and got lots of answers. Have none of you ever noticed someone doing something you thought odd and even inwardly wondered why?

It does seem sometimes that some gransnet members are looking for something negative to say. I’m very wary of starting a thread- even on a ‘harmless’ topic as I’d be nervous of the responses I might get. ?

jenpax Sat 02-Jun-18 18:33:08

On another thread people have been laying into drivers of large cars! so it seems that there are always folks ready to make judgements on other people’s purchases. As I said before it’s no ones business what others spend their money on as long as it’s not illegal or damaging to others! I don’t take an annual holiday in the sun only going every 3 years away and I don’t run a car! Both these have a heavier environmental impact than a solitary take away coffee. I wish the people who criticise others spending habits would consider just not being so judgemental

Nanny41 Sat 02-Jun-18 18:22:56

Oh dear, the friendly Gransnet spirit seems to be disappearing, people are very brave these days writing on here, as some answers are not friendly.
The coffee cup business is just a modern day thing,I am glad I dont drink coffee and wouldnt be seen dead carrying one of these cups. Each to their own!

downtoearth Sat 02-Jun-18 17:41:44

At least it's not a can of special brewgrin

Magrithea Sat 02-Jun-18 17:31:33

Well said MawBroon!! It's no-one's business but her own whether she buys a coffee on her way home or not!

Aepgirl Sat 02-Jun-18 16:54:22

It really is nothing to do with you. If it irritates you so much, make sure you are not watching when you know she will pass your house.

Baggs Sat 02-Jun-18 16:52:00

Long ago I read a book in which the author was at pains to stress that it's allright if other people don't understand your behaviour. There will always be some who don't. Sometimes rather a lot. His argument was that it doesn't matter and, in any case, you often won't understand the actions of other people either.

JanaNana Sat 02-Jun-18 16:43:45

This is maybe her one daily treat/luxury that she chooses to drink at home. Perhaps the type of coffee is something that she otherwise could,nt afford. Each to their own.

LynneB59 Sat 02-Jun-18 16:33:52

I can't understand it either!

Overthehills Sat 02-Jun-18 16:11:13

I thought you were going to say that she chucked her cup into your garden everyday Mabon!
Maybe she has a stressful morning every single day getting her family ready for the day and this is her sigh of relief.
Sorry but it really isn’t any of our business what others spend their money on.

crystaltipps Sat 02-Jun-18 15:51:03

At least she’s not buying a packet of fags as she might have been 50 years ago.

MawBroon Sat 02-Jun-18 15:47:46

I am conscious of the old biddies I knew I my childhood who were so easily outraged by the “younger generation” Never watched Corrie but I believe Ena Sharples and her buddies portrayed them well.
Perhaps that is why I do all I can not to be disapproving or judgemental, whether trolleys are full of junk food or pushed by hipsters buy avocafoes and organic sourdough! What would my trolley say about me?
It is soon enough after losing Paw for me still to be self conscious about buying single portions, small sizes and things which scream out “on her own” but I can at least make it round the supermarket now unlike in the early days when I would abandon my trolley and sit and sob in the car.
Other people’s indulgences are their business, if takeaway lattes had existed when our 3DDs were tiny, what a godsend that might have been! (With or without George Clooney!)
