I know it is possible, my friends 90 year old mother had a very debilitating stroke 2 years ago and has been in a nursing/care home since being discharged from hospita
and it was a battle to “prove” she needed 24/7 care but also the administration of meds and nursing care (not that she gets much)
The house was safe because her 94 year old husband still lives in it and she had no pension of her own and very little money other than joint accounts etc What her husband has was effectively “halved” between them and the contribution her family make to supplement what SS will pay is not actually too bad.
