Following on from ,’ not sitting outside’.

I love the idea of a barbecue but the reality doesnt matchup.
I am not good at cooking on a barbecue and when invited to one,I am given food I wouldn't dream of eating normally, I do not appreciate or normally eat beef burgers or sausages, chicken kebabs are ok.
The wine is usually plentiful but often out of a box, and I am trulynot a snob, I Just like good food and wine, preferably sitting at a table.
However if anyone wants to invite me I am available most evenings?

uh long... long waits for not much! end up both bloated & still hungry after your average BBQ.

I like them when there are good cuts of meat/fish properly marinaded & theres lots of good sides, potato salad, a good homemade slaw, PROPER bread not just burger buns. And good cold wine.

A BBQ is a good excuse for men to do the cooking. Fortunately my OH loves cooking and a bit of sun is a good excuse to do a BBQ. We have a big family with meat eaters. Vegetarians, vegans, fish eaters, non fish eaters etc etc, so a BBQ is easy to do a big spread with something for everyone and not as formal as a dinner party. Everyone can bring a dish and a bottle. Sit outside so no crumbs and mess indoors. Beer and wine and maybe a cocktail if we want to do a grown up one. What’s not to love?

I love cocktails and will bring my own steak, so can I come?

I’ve never been given anything I want to eat at a barbecue. Veggie burgers like cardboard, half-done vegetable kebabs, stodgy white bread rolls.
By the time the food is cooked I’ve filled up on crisps and a glass of water. Yum yum!
And all grilled/burnt food is carcinogenic.

Not eating meat, even having a veggie burger cooked on a bbq (away from any meat) has never appealed to me. I do like lots of lovely salads though, quinoa salads and salads with wild rice, so many interesting recipes to choose from nowadays. Add some interesting bread and a delicious desert and I am happy.

I'm not a barbecue fan. I'm always scared of getting food poisoning - I'm not sure why, as I've not had a such an experience - and I prefer to sit down at a proper table to eat.

My late MIL was raised in India and she hated the smell of barbecues as it reminded her of the burning ghats where bodies were cremated.

Me being the one who doesn't do outside I don't actually mind BBQs especially at someone else's house (although I would always try to sit in the shade!). In years gone by though when we had family near us we did have some great parties for big occasions - my parents 50th & 60th wedding anniversaries and my youngest son's pre-wedding party, their emigration party and eldest daughter's 18th all of which we did BBQ's for. Providing the food is cooked well (my sausages have to be burned black) and there are plenty of salads, potatoes etc when I've had chance to eat it I've enjoyed it. Wouldn't dream of BBQ ing for just the two of us which friends we know regularly do. Far easier to burn it all in the oven!!

Love going to BBQs at someone else’s house but hate hosting them.

Can't stand the smell of barbecues (I am vegetarian) and never accept invitations to them. And I curse all barbecues when the smell wafts through my patio doors and I have to close them on a lovely sunny day ☹️️

Depends whose BBQ it is. Dd2/sil do fantastic food, home made potato salad, baked potatoes, crusty bread, lots of green salads, tomato and mozzarella salad etc and even the veg kebabs are marinaded. Sil cooks steak, chicken, prawns as well as burgers (from the butcher) and kindly cooks my veg food on a separate small bbq from their caravan! Their bbqs are legendary. I really don’t enjoy a leathery veg burger in a slightly dry roll though which is quite common at other bbqs. What really annoys me though is when the host has only bought one pack of veggie burgers, usually around 4, and then the meat eaters snaffle them! I’ve often been left with just a salad roll.

I have never understood those who love BBQs. I don't mind eating outdoors but why cook something over an open fire like some caveman when there is a perfectly good kitchen inside the house!

Well this cavewoman loves BBQs!

It's all about getting together with family and friends. Having a drink or two and a jolly good time.

No mess inside and a chance for the cavemen to shine (or not as the case may be)

I often cook on the barbecue in a heatwave because cooking indoors makes the kitchen too hot. Lots of people here have a second cooker (PLG) outside for the very hot weather.

I hate barbecues, revolting smell and either undercooked or overcooked food. I have had food poisoning after such an event and will never repeat the experience. DH and I have had several days spoilt recently by stife pervading our garden, have to keep windows shut to stop the smell lingering in the house too.

Having lived many years in very much a holiday area with second homes,and flats/homes to let all around, I certainly had more than enough of what I would call "Second hand Barbecue" feasts..............all these holidaymakers so set on them and possibly not quite getting the handle of coping correctly with them.

Resulting of course, in this burning aroma that seemed to stick in every nook and crevice........and for ever!
Not at all pleasant.

So little wonder I am no barbecue fan!!!

I love my al fresco picnics,or meals served outside in a shaded area, but barbecuing is NOT my thing!!

We love hosting BBQs, but then I am lucky that DH is very good at cooking on a BBQ! We have a big table on a shaded patio which is very nice for eating out doors and with plenty or room for people to wander off and children to play (My mother's house has quite a large plot of land so plenty of space) Also set well away from neighbours, so I like to think it doesn't bother anyone.
I will protest that the wine does NOT come out of a box!
I will admit to paper plates on bbq days - saves me on clearing up, which is my job as DH cooks the meat (the fact taht I do all salads, etc doesnt count) Lol

We had BBQ when the children were still at home just for the four of us and maybe one of their friends. Once or twice since they left we've invited another couple but they are not enthusiastic about it. We have since dumped the equipment.

I remember my mother moving to a house that had a BBQ - and a garden away from the house that you had to walk to - that's another story!). Shortly after they moved in she was mad keen to have a BBQ. We all fetched up there on an overcast day and walked to the garden (and back again several times to pick up things that had been forgotten) and then it started pouring with rain. Mum refused to give up on it and we all stood ion the wet eating soggy half-cooked food from a dying BBQ! That's the life!

I really dislike barbecues. As a vegetarian, I hate the smell of charred flesh and I don't want to eat veggie burgers or veggie sausages or anything that apes the taste and texture of meat.

With you on this one ! Would much rather cook inside and eat outside, no inclination for a barbecue whatsoever !

DSiL absolutely adores BBQs. He has a professional BBQ permanently sited in the garden along with a back up one for 'just in case'. They have a purpose built area for outdoor eating. It all seems madness in Scotland. However, he is a fantastic chef and creates wonderful food, some of the best I've ever eaten. Not the usual stuff at all. Fabulous marinated chicken curries etc.
My main thought is that it's just an outside cooker. It could all be done in their conveniently located kitchen but that's not the point apparently! Oh well. I'm happy enough to enjoy the fruits of his outdoor labour!

I'm also a veggie and dread being invited to a barbecue. I can't bear the smell of burning meat drifting from other people's gardens and usually hasten to close all my windows. One of my DSs is a former chef and greatly in demand with friends and neighbours to officiate at their barbecues!

I would love a garden in which to host a BBQ !
I love cooking and can honestly say I haven't poisoned anyone with BBQ food (or any other food!)
It doesn't have to be burnt or boring, you just need some imagination ?
