Nan/Nana/Nanny

I’m Nan. I never had any grandparents so no precedent. My children’s only grandmother wanted them to use her name as she felt too young to be a grandmother. I like Nan.

My own grandparents were Granny, Grandma, and Grandad. My grandchildren all call me Mammar and refer to me as the Mammar with cats, so as not to confuse them with their other Mammar who cuts nails - she's a Chiropodist. My husband is Grandad, but when the children were very young he was Gangang

I chose grandma, because my eldest granddaughter (18months) has six cousins on her father's side who call his mother nanny. She is slim and short and I'm.....neither, and I feared I would end up being called "Big Nanny." I really wanted to be called nonna, but my children all thought that would be wildly pretentious (we're not Italian.) The only grandchild who can talk now calls me mam-ma. Which sounds Italian.

I called my grandmothers Nanna,
My children called my mother Nanna
My grandchildren call me Nanna. (We are still trying to find a name for them for my mother, though.)

I thought people only called their grandmothers "Granny" in books.

Yes, my 18month old elder granddaughter has started calling me mam-ma (grandma.) It's unbelievably lovely.

I had a Nana but my GC call me Grandma as the in laws got in there first with Nanny. It doesn't bother me though - there's a certain je ne sais quoi to being called Grandma!!!

I'm Nan to all my grandchildren and love it. It's so much less ageing than Granny.

When my DIL was pregnant her mother collared me and asked whether I would prefer to be Grandma or Granny. There was a lot of “I really don’t mind. How about you?” conversation, but she insisted I have first choice, so I chose Grandma because I rather preferred my own grandma to my granny. Grandma and Granny we have remained. Nobody mentioned Nan/Nana/Nanny, luckily. I would have refused to be called any of those. I just don’t like them.

All the grandmothers in my own family have been Granny or Grandma and all in DH's family had been Nanna. I just couldn't be anything other than Granny so as DDIL's family are also known as Granny when talking about us we have the place we live tacked on to avoid confusion. It is the only time I have represented my country!

Sometimes the decision is made by the grandchildren as was the case with friends. The first little GC called her 'Cranny' and so her DH became 'Nook'. The latter name clearly invented by the child's parents. Nook and Cranny always made me smile.

I had a granny and a Nan and they both came from Bristol,my mum was Nan to my children but to my grandchildren I am Grandma or Granny ?

I only had one Granny the other and both my grandfathers died before I was born. I am thrilled to be a Granny and my husband is Papa. We don’t care how old it sounds. It’s a real privilege.

I am a nana by choice, but growing up I only had a great grandma who died when I was 9. Both my grandmothers and a granddad died from TB in the 1930's.

I'm grandma or gran . Would hate to be called granny nanny or nan . But each to thier own heh ?

I used not to like nanny, but it was what my little Gdd called me until she was over 2, so it became very sweet. She now calls me Granny.
Dh (Grandpa) was Ba-pa for a long time, and that's what little Gds 21 months now calls him. He hasn't got around to any consistent name for me, but I don't mind since he wants lots of cuddles anyway.
