How does he know!?

My usual routine is to be up, dressed and breakfasted by 9.00. On occasion I allow myself a lie-in and a late leisurely breakfast which I did today. So how does my B-i-L know when this happens as he invariable chooses those days to drop in for a cup of tea and a chat - which happened again this morning!

I am very fond of him and he is a truly lovely man but how does he know which days to catch me mid-breakfast and with my hair still in rollers (fortunately for him I was dressed)

It's Karma. I only ever see anyone when I look like I have emerged from the shrubbery backwards never when glammed up.

kittylester Wed 28-Mar-18 12:33:40

Karma exactly. Nipping to Waitrose in gardening clothes and sods law says I meet all sorts of people just off out somewhere dressed up to the nines!!

I have a very glamorous friend and I always seem to bump into her when I've quickly nipped out to the shops without makeup and in my "house clothes"

I have a lovely neighbour who I enjoy seeing and having a brewcupcake with but how does she know that I like sit down and watch my favourite programme at 2pm and never fails to knock 2/3 times a week just at the opening credits.

We had new young neighbours just before Christmas and I said to DH a couple of weeks ago why is it that I only ever seem to run into them when I am pottering round looking like a badly dressed scarecrow (okay, that’s most of the time, but hey grin!).

It is like DD who always rings just as I put plates of hot food on the table. It is not deliberate but she rings in her lunch hour or after work and our meal times can be variable.

It's called Sod's law!

Harris27 Thu 29-Mar-18 10:14:24

Laughed at this post my mother in law always rang just as we sat down to tea. In later years she would ring at 6pm and stay on the phone till just before emmerdle. Sadly she died in February and I wander about after 6pm like a lost soul!!

gerry86 Thu 29-Mar-18 10:22:47

It's also Sod's Law that people call in when the house is a tip, never when it's neat and tidy.

We would go away for the weekend and my mum would always call within 10 minutes of being back. How did she know?

wilygran Thu 29-Mar-18 10:27:14

Harris27 you made me laugh! I've got an old friend who always rings between her finishing her tea & Emmerdale

Morning all! Very lovely day here. Fact is I only ever wear 'scruff' gear at home. So when friends and neighbours see me scrubbed up they always look surprised and that is a constant source of amusement. Glad they notice the difference! As for callers too early in the morning, I either answer in my dg or don't answer the door at all. The first method usually has an ensuing conversation and they tend to check if I'm 'decent' on future visits. All good. Delighted to still be having visitors.

nipsmum Thu 29-Mar-18 10:34:42

I always look the same . Clothes on hair combed, can't wear make up, so come and see me anytime. Unless I'm out with the dog, but I won't be long.????

I'd love to have some of you gransnetters drop in, you're all so funny. Perhaps not now though, it's 10.45 am and I'm still in my jim-jams. Anyone in Devon out there? Love to meet up.

sarahellenwhitney Thu 29-Mar-18 11:09:41

I understand you enjoy these visits so not complaining. It is no mystery drawn blinds /curtains could to someone who knows you indicate you may be having a lie in. So what is BIL's option other than to comeback later?

Shortly after we moved house hubby was going out for the morning so I decided to have a real good cleaning session and went through the whole bungalow. In the bathroom i spilled some cleaner on my t shirt so got washed and changed and tidied my hair. Within 5 minutes of hubby arriving home an ex colleague of his arrived with his wife to visit. You can't imagine how smug I felt this never happens to me I usually get visitors when the house is upside down and I am in oldest gardening clothes.

Oldwoman70 Ah me! 'Tis my eternal dream to be looking perfect and smart when I open my front door.

Recently I was told a workman was coming to my house after lunch. I was ill, so I decided to lie down until 11, then shower and dress. I set an alarm in case I fell asleep.

At 11 I was naked and warming the shower water when I just managed to hear a banging on the front door. I grabbed a black "down" (more like man made fibre) filled coat and putting it on as I went downstairs proceeded to the door. It was the workman to sort out my floor problems. Early! I opened the door. As I was trying to say sorry I was expecting you later, my coat came undone across my bust exposing my quite big boobs. He laughed. I turned my back on him to let him through the door and I found my coat was not covering my bum. I tried to pull it over my embarrassed cheeks with no effect. I shoved him in the nearest room and hurried away to get dressed. He was doubled up laughing.

It was only the next day that I found I had picked up a small jacket, not a coat, to cover my nakedness.

AAAAAAGGGHHHH! and he has to come back!!

FarNorth Thu 29-Mar-18 11:50:23

marpau there must have been unbelievable levels of smugness! smile

FarNorth Thu 29-Mar-18 11:53:06

You have extended my life by a few seconds, by giving me a laugh, luzdoh.
I can imagine the embarrassment, tho!

Angharad56 Thu 29-Mar-18 11:55:40

I love my friends dearly, but hate unannounced visits. Am I wierd?

Jalima1108 Thu 29-Mar-18 12:04:18

When you decide to nip downstairs in your dressing gown, hair standing on end, to do a bit of vacuuming before you have your shower - and someone calls by!

widgeon3 Thu 29-Mar-18 12:05:11

Angharad56

NO

I'm sure a friend of mine would let me tell you (she's at work right now). Her dear late father worked in Legal Matters and had to see all the evidence being presented before cases in The Old Bailey for example. Most things were horrific. Some slightly less so. For example he would have to watch videos in cases of pornographic infringement of the Law.

One hot summer day it was so hot in the Inns of Court, he went home with some videos of a pornography case and started to watch them on his TV. It was so hot he took off all his clothes except his pants.

Suddenly the door opened and in came his wife with, in uniform no less, the Girl Guide Commissioner and several Girl Guide Leaders coming to have a meeting!

Imagine these respectable ladies' reaction to finding the husband of one of their team sitting nearly naked watching porn in the middle of the afternoon!!

shw " It is no mystery drawn blinds /curtains could to someone who knows you indicate you may be having a lie in. So what is BIL's option other than to comeback later?"

The last time I didn't open my curtains my neighbours told me they were seriously thinking of breaking down the door! I now get up open the curtains and go back to bed!
