Ant and Dec come across as likeable, cheeky chappies but who knows what they are really like. I don't wish addiction on anyone, famous or not. At least he has the money to get the best help, some are not so lucky.

I find some cruel comments here, seems the fact that this man has made a lot of money is a bigger crime than alleged drunk driving. Why should someone who is on tv, film or stage retire because they have made money. I don't watch their Saturday programme, I am concerned for anyone ,in the public eye or not who are struggling with an addiction. Fame and/or wealth does not ease the demon of addiction, they feel anxiety, depression, fears, as do we all.

I once almost watched a programme but when Ant and Dec appeared I had to switch off. They were too brightly inane.

Known alcoholics should not be allowed to drive. But having said that they can be very devious. I have no sympathy for those who drink and drive but I feel for an alcoholic and his family.

It is a terrible additction, one of the hardest to overcome in a society that accepts drinking as a social norm. There are many on here who have experience of alcoholism within their own families who will understand just what a terrible disease it is.

It doesn’t matter whether they are rich and famous or the down and outs we see sleeping rough on the streets. It is a curse.

Being with his mum in no way excuses drunk driving and I think you’ll that find I didn’t say that. I think it does show is that they are close, she is trying to care for her son and he spends his time with her. He isn’t falling out of nightclubs or out partying but trying to cope with his troubles. He’s made a huge mistake and it will have consequences, but I really dislike the way some are so ruthless in their condemnation.

As a GNer said, on another thread, celebrities put themselves in the public eye therefore must accept criticism as part of the package.
If they don't like the press hounding them, then get out of the limelight. They can't cherry pick what is and isn't reported.

I get what you say bikergran and agree in general but there are so many different stories about this incident and I have learnt from experience that you should not be too quick to judge at this stage. People who witnessed the incident have said Ant was clearly traumatised and he could have been still over the limit from the night before and not realised when he got in the car: I find it hard to believe his mum wouldn't have known if he had been drinking that morning or clearly still drunk, especially as they spent time together prior to getting into the car. The family involved are not acting in good faith as far as I am concerned - if my young child had been involved in an accident then, yes, I may have taken them to hospital to be checked just in case, but then I would have been at home, making sure she was mentally ok and dealing with the shock of an accident myself, not giving interviews. Very questionable behaviour, I feel. Until further details and actual facts are available, I will not be making any sweeping judgements - had this done to me (totally different circumstances) and it is shocking how even people who you thought would know better question you due to speculation.

So-called “celebrities” thrive on the attention they get from the public, on fame and publicity. So I have little sympathy for a life lived in the public eye being under scrutiny, even if I abhor the media vultures for their methods.
And how does being “with his mum” excuse drunk driving?
People get killed or seriously injured in road accidents, it is just fortunate that this did not have tragic consequences.

I hate the way the Daily Mail vultures swoop on any hint of a problem with people in the public eye. They’ve hounded this man through his marriage problems and taken awful unflattering pictures and things about his wife because she doesn’t meet their perfect ideal of what a ‘celebrity wife’ should look like. One look at the online version of the paper shows how a lot of effort has gone into trying to ruin him completely. He has his demons and is finding it hard to deal with them in the public eye. I think he’s a decent sort and that he and Dec are talented entertainers. It’s a blessing that no one was seriously injured but there are many worse things going on in the world. He was with his mum, for goodness sake!

They've made their millions. Why the rush to make more? Anthony (hate Ant, he's middle aged fgs) needs to fade out.

They give a lot if people a great night in .mthey are local lads that have done well, uchnanshame it's going to end like this remember no one is perfect and even money doesn't bring complete happiness as we all know. Good luck to him I'm sure he's feeling more than stupid and regret at the moment.

Why are people having a go at the parents in the car he hit? As far as I am aware they did not approach the press, the press tracked them down.

Ant made no attempt to approach the car with the family, his mother got out of the car, walked behind it and then walked back. As far as anyone knows his mother may have tried to take his keys but he refused.

He was apparently shouting at his mother and then argued with the police. I wonder if at some point he uttered the immortal words "don't you know who I am".

I might be harsh but I have no sympathy with him at all . He is a multi millionaire with the world at his feet. He has millions of fans and basically he is a drunk driver . No excuse for him ( or anyone else ) . As a fellow Geordie I am ashamed of his disgusting behaviour .

I do think that a lot of celebs/footballers/film starts/tv presenters etc etc have a

"I'm a celebrity! you cant touch me! I have a different rule book" I can do anything I want cos I have money and fame"..

Well I really like Ant and Dec and all their shows. I feel so sad for Ant because his life seems to be in free fall at the moment - and none of us know all the facts so I won't be judging him. His mum maybe didn't know he had had a drink - If he is not supposed to be drinking I don't think he would be doing it openly.

Apparently he drove at 50-60 miles an hour around a bend and overtaking a car, crashing into a car coming the other way which swerved and avoided a tragedy.

His mother should have taken his keys from him.
Ant was argumentative with the police, and clearly squiffy.

So in my mind Ant has behaved like a selfish idiot with no thought for other road users and he has massively damaged the brand and Dec's future.

I think Dec could be a presenter in his own right, he has done nothing wrong. I have no sympathy for Ant. I have no sympathy for drink drivers who do in fact kill people.

Yes there is pressure being a TV celebrity, a lot of expectations on their shoulders. But they have been doing far, far too much and not having long enough breaks. People are sick of the sight of them because of the over exposure. Their personal lives suffer, money can't cure all ills. I have no idea why they don't work this out for themselves.

I thought a while back that the wheels could only come off. And they have.

I read in an on line report that prior to the accident he was seen out walking the dog with his mother. I wonder whether he had been drinking earlier in the day or even the night before, so (he and) his mother may have been unaware that he would be over the limit. Not that I am excusing him in any way! If he was over the limit he should be charged.
