On a Parish-organised minibus drive, I was sitting by a young Philippine and started chatting to him as everyone else was ignoring him. At one point, I asked him what his favourite food was. He stared at me in puzzlement and then said "ALL food is good!" I could have bitten off my tongue. He really put me in my place - and quite right too!

I am just about to go out to an evening class, where one really nice lady said to another member "well, when you're widows like us...." (meaning herself and me). I said "goodness, do you have second sight? he was all right when I left"
I wasn't at all upset, fortunately, and neither of us had any idea why she might have thought I was widowed!

Great post ! when I was a nurse years ago a family were sitting beside their father and they had papers for him that needed signing They asked me if I would oversee them signing and aI said No I am sorry I am not allowed to
with our code of conduct because if anything went wrong Jim wouldn’t have a leg to stand on to which I gasped as Jim was an amputee ! the family including Jim all burst out laughing fortunately !

I have a similar story of saying to a patient ' Right Fred are you going to hop out of bed? This was Saturday and he'd had an amputation on Wednesday!

I’m on sick leave having survived a brain haemorrhage. A lovely friend came to visit me and told me about the new open pie her local butcher has started making - “spaghetti bolognaise with a thick layer of cheese on top - it’s lovely but like a heart attack pie. I should gave brought you one!”
A seconds pause and then we both fell about laughing!!!

He sounds rather unfriendly - and I don't believe he's right. they eat cats and dogs (and a lot of other things too) in the country he comes from

I was being so careful not to ask if a rather rotund friend was pregnant, as she had a one yr old, but wasn't losing the "baby fat"so it was about 3 weeks before her due date when I cautiously asked could she be . You didn't think think I was this fat did you, said she, -- you did didn't you!! I think she enjoyed keeping people guessing.

How comforting to read all the posts, I'm always doing it.

One of my friends visited a friend of hers who had just had a baby boy. She asked what he was going to be named. The new mum proudly replied "Roger". To which my friend said "Oh, Roger the lodger, whatever made you choose that"? There was silence for a few seconds, then the proud dad said "Because that's MY name.

I once asked a young lady in our office, who was born in this city to West Indian parents, 'what do Rastafarians believe in then?' She said 'How should I know, I'm a Brummie born and bred like you'. She never spoke to me again and I don't blame her.

Eloethan Wed 07-Mar-18 23:26:54

KatyK I can understand her being a bit put out but I think it's a bit harsh to never speak to you again.

KatyK Thu 08-Mar-18 10:26:08

Maybe Eloethan She probably though what an ignorant woman I was. In my defence, I was a lot younger then and as soon as the words came out of my mouth and saw the look on her face, I realised what I had said.

We spent a rather nice evening at an extremly smart restaurant that had recently opened in a hotel.

I sat explaining to other members of our party about the owners, their wealth and homes in Italy etc.

Our waiter came up and whispered in my ear. “He is sat”behind you on the next table” blush Mortified doesn’t really cover it!!

I once asked a customer when her baby was due, she said I'm not pregnant but I have 8 children! I wanted to curl up in the corner!

Nannarose Thu 08-Mar-18 17:12:22

Oh, KatyK, aren't there any Brummie Rastafarians? I might ask anyone what a group I didn't know much about might believe in.
Did she mean you can't ask anyone what Buddhists / Catholics / humanists might believe without checking first if they are one?
I suppose it might be more tactful to say 'Do you know much about Pagans / Quakers / Zoroastrians?' first.
Maybe she was a bit fed up with being stereotyped and snapped more than she might have done.

Billie. You should have told her to sew up her husbands pyjamas because a stitch in time saves 9.

I think I get it from my DM. A friend once showed her a new jumper she'd knitted to hear the response 'Does it suit you?'?
My neighbour had a toddler and one day I greeted her with 'Oh, you're having another baby,' she said she wasn't and I mumbled about the way her cardigan was hanging. A couple of weeks later she hailed me as being clairvoyant, she was! Phew.
Not so good was when someone I knew slightly was with what appeared to be a tall baseball-capped teenager. 'Is this your son?' I gushed. No, she assured me that it was her (not especially younger than she was) husband. Oops.

Enjoying this thread grin.
I've got loads, but my memory's going now (at 82) - I only remember the good things!

When my DD got married a few years ago,her best friend had another wedding to go to straight after,so her mum came to collect her after the ceremony and drive her there. Unknown to me,she was lurking in the background while the photos were being taken. When my DD,her friend and I were looking at the wedding photos a couple of weeks later,I spotted this strangely dressed woman in the background of a couple of the photos and said 'Who's that weird woman?' DD's friend said 'That's my mum!' I felt so embarrassed but luckily her friend thought it was hilarious.

I had just started to say their new lounge would look nicer when the badly fitted coving was removed, and stopped to listen to what my friend was about to say...…. I finished the coving yesterday and it looks so much better than before, Oops. I so nearly put my foot in it, but still remember it as if I'd said it.

DanniRae Fri 08-Jun-18 11:20:04

I was being shown a neighbours newly done up hall. It had red and yellow walls and a blue carpet which didn't match at all. I said "Well it'll look great when you get a new carpet" she said "It is a new carpet!". Oops blush

Mapleleaf Fri 08-Jun-18 11:54:34

Yes, indeed. There have been occasions when I wish I could take back my words.

JackyB Fri 08-Jun-18 11:57:36

Thanks for the chuckles everyone. I'm sure I've said several things like this, but often I seem somehow not to realise it.

However, in the few cases where I definitely remember putting my foot in it big time, I find that the injured party has usually forgotten the moment altogether after a few years. It gets blown up in our memories, but for the other person it is quite insignificant.

Years ago when coming out of a church after a wedding a spied the flowers and floral tributes left from a funeral.

There was a huge centrepiece which spelled out SISTER and very loudly I announced,

"How sad, she must have been a nurse!"

I still cringe remembering it! grin

I once replaced the vowel in wonky with another vowel.
